I've been keeping the carbs low for just over two weeks. This week I've kept my carbs below 30g a day and my calories below 1200. I am on 5x500mg Metformin t& 3x 80mg Gliclazide, plus Simvastatin, Aspirin and Ramipril.

On Weds I had the runs after my evening meal of 200g fish wrapped in a rasher of bacon and salad. This afternoon, after celery & cheese for lunch, I had the feeling I was getting the runs, but as I was marching round the Gog Magogs with the dog I had to ignore it and it went away. This evening, after chicken and salad, I've had a pretty nasty explosive bot.

So, is this sort of normal in the early stages of a low carb diet? I know it can be a side effect of Metformin, but I've been on them a few years and haven't had that side effect. I'm wondering if it is something to do with getting my blood sugar down and the Metformin kicking in in a different way?

Any ideas folks?

Have you increased your veg and salad significantly? If i do that, after a period of not-so-much veg, I get a single 'burst' with no other symptoms. It is like my bod is re-learning how to cope with large amounts of fibre.

Have you got any other symptoms?

No other symptoms. I have upped the salad to compensate for not eating my own homemade bread, which was always very high fibre - lots of seeds, rye flour etc.

I feel fine. Not ill in any way.

I think as a general rule any major dietary change can upset our regular patterns for a while. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it persists over time. A lot of people complain about constipation from low carb, but can't say it's ever had that effect on me.

I'll swap you. I'm bunged. Rhubarb not worked so going to have to open the flaxseed.

I am on 5x500mg Metformin

Are you taking too much Metformin ? thought 2,000 mg was the max for these

I'm taking the amount the GP prescribed. I'm seeing the diabetic nurse on 12th June, so if it continues I'll bring it up. I'd like to reduce the meds eventually.

Just found this:
Usual Adult Dose for Diabetes Type 2
500 mg orally twice a day (with the morning and evening meal)

Extended Release:
500 to 2000 mg orally once a day (with the evening meal). Maximum daily dose is 2500 mg.

Sorry did not mean to offend .. I read it as being a max of 2,000 per day.. But I am not on the slow release .. Missed it was slow release for you .

No offence at all. Did I sound abrupt? I have no idea if I am on slow release or not. Must check that, otherwise GP is overdosing me. Oooeerrr!!
