I do not have diabetes
My question is regarding symptoms and lack of, in relation to type 1 diabetes.
Is thirst and frequent urination always present with type 1 diabetes?
My daughter is almost 3. I will just tell you all the things I've noticed, even though they may not be relevant.
For the last few months (at least) she had been lethargic on and off but is tired a lot despite having plenty of sleep.
She doesn't seem to drink a lot but does occasionally have days where she will appear very thirsty and wee a lot.
She heals slowly.
Quite a lot of the time, I notice she has sweet/ nail varnish smelling breath.
She is currently poorly with a cough and cold but it has been ongoing for almost 3 weeks. Do diabetics take longer to get over illness?
She has pain when her belly is pressed, on the right side around the bottom of her ribs.
As she is poorly at the minute she is sleeping, a lot!
I have noticed the breath and the lethargy a lot previously, along with the slow healing.
I'm not sure how to phrase the question but would anyone possibly think any of the above would indicate diabetes type 1?
Sorry I don't know much about it and just a bit worried.
I know the best thing to do is see gp which I will do but just concerned they won't take it seriously or if they need to anyway?
Thanks

Hi, try not to worry, but what ever it is please take her to your GP straight away, or ring NHS helpline or even take her to A & E. She is young and very young children can deteriorate very quickly. when ill. It may not be what you think it is, but it will need to be ruled out, sooner rather than later.
Take care and good luck, the sooner you know the better it will be for all of you, as the unknown, is often the scariest..

Best wishes RRB

They will take you seriously, you need tests and a diagnosis, there are some symptoms there that need looking in to. I'd make an appointment today, or if you feel it's getting worse, go to the hospital.

@monkeymum, seen you were on-line, did you get your daughter checked out today as RRB mentioned, whatever you do don't delay and get her seen to asap if you haven't done so already.

Our GP surgery, tbh is a joke. If I request a same day appointment, it is with a nurse in which I have little confidence based on previous other appointments. Friday is the next available to see a GP.
I am worried that I will not be able to explain everything enough for them to understand my concerns and they will take me as another hypochondriac mother.

Take her to A & E.

write everything down in a note form and give to the DR, as noblehead said go to A&E

ps hypochondriac mother's have sick kids too..:)

@monkeymum please please take @nobleheads advice and take her to A and E! I dithered about taking my little girl to the docs for a couple of days and when she woke the following morning she couldn't see!! Honestly my lovely , children can get very sick very quickly.

Really hope she's ok , big hugs

Bex xx

I will ensure I write everything down.
I'm not sure what is alarming enough for A&E. I'm normally a worried mum but obviously not knowing all the symptoms and risks of diabetes, I feel like I can't express my concern to them enough..

I was exactly the same! I still worry that I'm a paranoid over protective mother and won't convey what the issues are properly or whether the doctor will think I'm making a fuss out of nothing. It happened today even....i dithered today but thought better to be safe than sorry.....good job I did as her blood glucose was 30.6!!

Keep a really close eye on her and remember you're her mum and know her better than anyone xx

Sam, read the symptoms back what you wrote in your opening post, they are serious enough to warrant a visit to A & E, your daughter doesn't sound well at all.

Last summer I had a bit of an accident, went to A&E, I saw one person who had a sprained ankle and heard someone who had woken up with a sore back. Just a couple of examples as to the type of everyday people who go to A & E. Bite the bullet, your little girl is very young, and her needs must come first. If it's not diabetes, that would be great news, but it needs to be eliminated. How is she today, any changes or any other symptoms. Do you have a relative, a close fiend, neighbour who could go with you for support ? Friday is too long to wait. Tomorrow morning, get your child there first thing,

Hi again, just wanted to say that none of us are medical professionals, and can't give out any medical advice or diagnose any medical conditions, so it is advisable to get the proper help from the NHS. Please would let us know how you get on,? I do hope your little one will feel better very soon.

All the best RRB

Thanks all for your help. She's at grandma's overnight (weekly thing) so I'm more anxious not knowing how she is all the time. I will try see a GP tomorrow and if not, go to urgent care (we don't have an A&E)

Hi, please take your daughter asap as my son had T1 when he was 11 months old and they told us he wouldn't have woken up the next morning if we didn't take him to A & E when we did. Don't want to frighten you but please take her. Read my blog (which needs updating) for our story

Good luck

Last year my daughter ( who was 2) was showing the same symptoms, although she was drinking excessively. Her behaviour was appalling also. We had an appointment booked with our daughter for a Friday but on the Tuesday of that week she seemed delirious during the night. The next morning she woke fine but then started screaming about severe tummy pains. She went unbelievable pale and almost past out in my arms. I called 111 but by the time they'd taken my details she was back to normal and eating her breakfast. They recommend I make an emergency appointment with the dr.
That afternoon we went to see the dr Who booked me another appointment for the next week to discuss my concerns as it was an emergency appointment and not supposed to be for discussions. I pushed him to do a blood test after describing all her symptoms. Her blood glucose levels were over 30 so he called an ambulance to take her to hospital immediately.
We stayed in for two nights and she's doing well now.
Don't be afraid of what Dr's might think. They're there to help diagnose. I wish I'd taken my daughter sooner but glad I made the emergency appointment and got her seen before things became worse.
I hope your little one is Ok and you get help. Even if it's to say she's absolutely fine and to put your mind at rest. When they're so young it's hard to know what they're thinking and feeling.

My daughter is 2.5 years and was diagnosed over Christmas type 1. I would urge you to seek medical advise ASAP and ask for a finger prick test as suspected diabetes and if it's not as suspected then your mind can be at rest. I hope your little one is ok x
