Again I've read an article where it tells me I'm going to live at least 10 years less, going to go blind, have parts amputated. Another article (plus TV) tells me that type 2 is curable & so it goes on. As a newbie I haven't a clue what is right but I do know that I started eating Paleolithic on 1st January (before I was diagnosed in March) & have lost 19lbs so far. I am on 1 Metformin a day & realistically my goal is to lose another 5 stones at least & then come off medication altogether. The 5 Stones is very doable but am I dreaming about controlling this with diet only?

That's interesting, thank you & of course you are right. There just seems to be such conflicting information I am due to see the Diabetes Nurse on Monday which will be my second visit. I'll have a good chat with her & see what she advises. If I go down that route I'll buy a blood tester so that I can keep an eye on things. Thank you for the reply.

There certainly is, but what we do know is that the fate of a controlled diabetic and that of an uncontrolled diabetic are often completely different.

There are people who have lived with diabetes more than 50 years (some on this forum) and that was back in the days before glucometers, modern oral medication, modern insulin, and carb counting. While there certainly isn't a "Cure" for diabetes, at least not yet, that doesn't mean you can't live a full and complete life.

The bottom line is that diabetes, by itself, is not a killer. It is UNCONTROLLED diabetes that cuts lives short.

As far as whether or not you can control your diabetes with diet-only? For some that is possible while for others it is not. My advice, speaking as a fellow diabetic, is to not fear medication. If you need it, then you should take it. 10 times out of 10 I'd rather be insulin-dependent with an a1c of 5.0% than to be medication-free with an a1c of 7.0%.

The thing is with the conflicting information is you will probably get it off the dsn as well.
What you need to do is gain the knowledge of what is good for you.
The only way is testing with a blood glucose monitor.
That way you can find out what makes your blood glucose levels go too high and keeps them there and of course what doesn't.
The usual suspects are carbs and sugars.

Have a good look around the forum and read about the success stories and how others have controlled their diabetes with diet only. It is possible and low carb works.

In my experience of control and losing five stone plus and getting my life back.
The prophets of doom are very far away.
Of course there's always the bus analogy!

Thank you all for all your valuable advice & I genuinely do take on board what everyone says. Can I just say that I was eating Paleolithic before being diagnosed so eating in this way & losing weight is my priority. I know this will probably sound daft & I'm probably being very naive but Diabetes for me is a positive because it will stop me falling off the Paleolithic waggon.

It doesn't sound daft at all, and I've felt the same way (at least so far).

It's a matter of making the most out of a difficult situation, finding new ways to stay motivated, and challenging yourself to do things you never believed you could do before.

Best of luck. Sounds like things are working well for you. Keep it up.
