Hi all,

After twenty years of somewhat half decent control, I have started to become more intrigued of how the future looks. Recently diagnosed with Diabetic eye disease, noticed numerous other changes as well. Has anybody got a success story with T1D?

Thanks in advance ☺️

Hi JHol94,

I fully understand where you are coming from, as I'm in a similar boat, as in I've been diabetic type one for 25 years and it's only the last four or five years that the ailments of long term diabetes have raised their ugly head.

First starting with my feet (neuropathy) then moving on to my legs (PAD) and it was at this time that I realized that I really needed to get my diabetes under much better control, as again very much like you until this point I was sort of Only half decent controlled.

I can't tell you there's a success story from my point of view, all I can say is that I've got my sugars under much better control now and this is preventing the ailments that I already have from getting any worse.

I totally understand where you are coming from and you need now to get your sugars under better control just like I've done and which you can do. You'd be quite surprised how little medical intervention I have with my diabetes care, so if I can do it, I truly believe you can too, and you can always come here to ask for support.

Stay positive, it's never too late to better your diabetic care.

Good luck.

42 years of diabetes over 30 years of them absolutely terrible terrible control and yep suffered some serious complications , not what u want to hear but last 8 years of really good control and things are definitely better than they could have been , i still have complications but all quietened down, had laser treatment on my eyes when I was in my late 20s ,I’m 60 now and have the standard letter from retinopathy checks , ( slight signs nothing to worry about) every year , any improvement in blood sugar control is miles better than no improvement at all

Again, much appreciated, it's difficult to imagine you've had T1D for double the time and you're still alive, you've given me a different prospective, issues are not imminent they're in the future if the blood sugars aren't controlled now.

JHol94, you hit the nail on the head with that last comment "issues are not imminent they're in the future if the blood sugars aren't controlled now."

I wish I was told that when I was younger, but it is still not to late to turn the tide and get better management of your diabetes, to stop the side effects getting worse.

Ushthestaff, thanks for the inspirations, sometimes we need to hear that it is not all gloom and doom, that you can change things around and your living proof of that, well done and thank you for your inspiring words.

Have a great day / evening / night,

i Suppose people who are new to diabetes in an era of personal blood sugar meters etc can’t imagine a life where there were none. , how did we control diabetes , but we did and we are still here , I’ d be quite positive about living a long life with diabetes in todays technical world , as us ” oldies “ have managed it with our what is now archaic past

my diabetes will be 19 years old at the end of May. I have only mild polyneuropathy. I don't know if my story can be considered a success, but I'm still alive and relatively healthy. :hilarious: Although, of course, I don't think I can live as long and well as people without diabetes

My diabetes is just coming up for its 20th birthday.
Touch wood, I have no complications - my last retinal scan came out clear, my kidneys, liver, heart, etc are all healthy.
