Hi, Im 28 and have had diabetes for the amount of time in my subject note. If Im honest Im fed up with it.

Never really stuck to the "rules", eat what I want when I want, I know when to do a correction dose and I seem to be ok.... but Im concerned that Im not.

When I was younger I used to lie to my doctor about what Ive eaten etc, and my routine, as I dont really have a routine. Im not sure what Im trying to say but it helps to air it somewhere without someone tutting at me etc (which you are probably doing but its ok as I cant hear you!)

I have 4 injections a day... when I remember - that sounds awful but I lose track of time then see that lunch has passed, had some food but forgot to inject... My life isnt busy or hectic, so I dont know why I do it (or dont)

My team leader at work is not interested... "you dont really suffer with it do you...?" were the words used in a return to work meeting after being ill. She was probably trying to be pc about it but came out wrong, but if she said it then she probably thinks it. Ive offered her some literature to read but she said to pass it to occupational health as she referred me to them... either doesnt know how to deal with it or doesnt want to. Was put on an action plan to "help" me. Well being told Ive had too much time off sick is really helpful to my recovery and I feel awful whenever I have to call in sick... working in an open plan office is not ideal as I catch everything.

Sorry, this has turned into an essay, Im just frustrated... why me?

If it makes you feel any better all kids lie about what they have eaten and what their bsl's have been(I've been told 5mml/l is the usually reduction). As a parent of a diabetic we are told that if we want to know the truth we are to look through the memory of the meter. My son is a bit young to be up to diabetic mischief but I have spoken to many parents who know what is going on with their teenagers. Diabetic teams are well aware that people lie also but don't find it to be very successful brow beating people. Anyway, don't feel guilty about the past.

Very sorry to hear your workplace is unsupportive. At least there is support for you here as you sound like you need a bit around now.

After having diabetes so long you obviously know what you need to be doing and you know the risks. I've only been treating my son for 1 1/2 years and I find it tedious and tiring but just keep on going. Have you thought of getting a pump or looking at some of the new stuff about. A change might spark your interest.

Anyway, this is a good place to vent some frustration. Jen.

Hi mer

There is one saying in life, you can’t change the past but you can change the future…

And it does sound as though you are having a rough time of it at the moment, which is affecting your work…

You say that you should inject 4 times a day, so it sounds like you are already on the basal/bolus regime, but either haven’t been taught how to use this to your best advantage or you sort of not doing what you need to do to best advantage of this…

Have you been taught carb counting and how to adjust your dose of insulin accordingly?
Have you been shown good monitoring practices, how what the data means, and what to do with it?

I would suggest ask your diabetic clinic if they have a carb counting course such as DAFNE, as these are very good to get you up and running with carb counting, how your insulin reacts with different types of foods, what factors effect how your insulin will work, how to monitor but also how to translate that data so you can make your own insulin dose adjustments, which will go a very long way to enabling you to control your diabetes to your best advantage.

Yes it is hard to start taking control of your diabetes, and sticking to good practice, but there are many advantages of doing so, first being that you will actually feel better in yourself, not have so much time of work and give yourself a much brighter looking future, with limiting impact or avoidance of future diabetic complications.

I would also suggest that you post some of your problems with control that you have in the T1 forum as perhaps will may be able to help, with the different ways and methods that we all use that could help to resolve your problems… As the is the old saying what works from one may not work for the other… So the more different ways you can see of how to get something to work, the more likely you’ll going to find the one that works for you.

Hi Mer and welcome

I think we all get fed up with it on occassions, I've only been diagnosed type 2 for just over a year, my initial reaction was to just ignore it and hope it went away. It didn't got to the stage where I was falling asleep almost every time I sat down ( falling off a chair sideways is not to be recommended ). I think a lot of it was the lack of support from the GP surgery. Finally found this site and it made all the difference to me.

If you want to try and turn things around there are people in here can offer you advice because they have probably been there and done it before you.

If you just want to post in and tell us how **** you feel then fine - we can offer moral support.

I would suggest you try the first option - it can make a difference :)

Hi Mer, I haven't been diagnosed for long and am already cheesed off with the change in diet...I just want something greasy and carby so I am sure there are times when everyone falls off the wagon and the teenage years have to be the worst as all you want to do is be a 'normal' teenager and have some fun. As Jen says i wouldn't dwell on the past though. I have found immense support on here and no longer feel like the freak that the doctors made me out to be and have come to terms with this being my friend for life.
Good luck with work [some people can't help being ignorant!!] and I am sure that you will find a great deal of help on here :)
Welcome x

Thankyou everyone for all your replies!

I have been shown how to carb count etc... I just slip into old routines. It takes me back to when i was doing my A levels 10 years ago and I was then changed from 2 to 4 injections a day, but beacuse for 13 years previously i had only been doing 2 I was slipping back into old "habits"... then Instead of coming out with predicted A's I got D,E and N!! oh well

My diabetic nurse is always so helpful, I come out knowing what I am supposed to do, stick to it then fall back again. I think I need a lot more self discipline.

Thankyou again for all your help, and I will scour these boards further

Mer x
