I have had pins and needles for the past three weeks now, 24/7 slowly travelling up my body - started in feet, spread to legs and are now up to my waist - it is constant and very tiring. I can still walk - well shuffle in flats and am still working etc but it's a bit scary.I am a 49 year old diabetic diagnosed 2 yrs ago. It was a bit of a shock since I am not overweight, have a healthy vegetarian diet and no family history of diabetes with no symptoms apart from being a bit thirsty. At diagnosis my blood sugars were over 30 (!) I was diagnosed a type 2 and initially was on tablets, moved to insulin, at one point came off everyyhing for three weeks but went back onto insulin - just small doses - 3 units am and pm. Finally saw a consultant who put me on replaglinide in September but they didn't seem to be effective so I am now on the tablets but topping up with insulin. My GP has taken blood tests and I will be seeing her Monday though she has said the majority have come back clear eg sugar levels etc. Has anyone else experienced this? It's kind of scary since the pins and needles are still spreading upwards with no respite - I am feeling them in my back now. The GP seems quite relaxed about it - should I be worried?

Hi
I am a type 1 diabetic on insulin and metformin. I was wondering whether you may have a trapped nerve in your back, this is only by my own experience. I also have neuropathy in my feet, but i was talking to another diabetic called gollymax and he suffers with a problem called restless leg and he said this was due to diabetes, but he has had it a long time. I have had diabetes 36yrs and he has had it about 50yrs.
Trying looking him up through members, I think he is on the second or third page of the letter G
Good luck and keep your chin up, also mention it to your doctor as i am not sure how you get diagnosed with this problem, other wise demand a second opion.
Keep in touch

Hi Tracey

Thanks for replying. I saw the doctor yesterday - the pins and needles have now travelled up to my chest so its severe pins and needles from feet to chest, still 24/7. The doctor was bemused -all blood tests clear - she said it could not be a trapped nerve - she has referred me to the consultant for an emergency appointment - am still waiting! If anyone else on the forum has any ideas please post them - can't stand it much more

Hi I thought I'd update you on my situation - the diabetic consultant finally realised it was nothing to do with diabetes and I was booked in for an mri scan (body and head) and then admitted to hospital. After numerous tests including a lumbar puncture they discovered stripped nerves in my spinal chord. till waiting for final tests results - seeing the neurology consultants tomorrow - hopefully with final diagnosis. An exhausted but can walk around slowly and am hopeful for full recovery
