24hour fast

So I’ve had to fast for a procedure in hospital , having had nothing but water for 24 hours and only scrambled eggs the 24 hours before that I was worried my numbers were gonna go very low and maybe cause problems .
Usually when I get home from work after a hard day I’m around 4.2-4.6 so yesterday got home to a 4.2 - nothing unusual!
So after actually feeling like I’m starving to death this morning got a 5.2,
Checked about 20 mins ago (feel now like I’m actually dying of starvation - 5.1!
My body seems to stay in the 5s during 1st half of day no matter what then goes down to the 4s late afternoon
Just thought this was odd I was honestly expecting a 3 or something today! I feel like it should be a 1!
Then pork scratchings and cheese are getting a hammering later!!

Totally normal. The liver prevents hypoglycaemia by converting glycogen back into glucose and sending it out into the bloodstream. If its glycogen store is depleted then it will manufacture glucose from protein, or even convert fat back into glucose.

This happens under the action of glucagon and will continue until insulin blocks glucagon (you just ate).

Thankyou, that’s good to know

Your body is well acquitted to produce enough glucose when you dont eat from your stores. Liver and fat converted over. Like dawn effect all day i think!

If anything the stress of being hungry and maybe stressed about upcoming operation could make your body request more glucose then an average day explaining why its even slightly higher then your normal.

Hope it all goes/has gone well any way!
