Hi, I did post a few times when newly diagnosed, but went overboard with too much advice, often contradicting and always confusing. I decided to do what my doctor and nurse told me and eat their recommended diet without testing. On diagnosis 14 weeks ago my hba1c was above12, cant remember exactly, got results of blood test back on friday, hba1c now 5.6. Furthermore my weight has dropped from 134kg to 118kg, still a fair bit to go, so I am very happy at what I have achieved. I am therfore going to place my faith in the medical proffesion and continue to do as they suggest. Doc did do scare tactics on me at diagnosis, I was also at high risk of heart attack, said if I wanted to see 50 then I needed to do something. Thats only 4 years away and hopefully I can do this and improve my health and live a heck of a lot longer than that. Thanks for the advice guys, I will keep reading the forum, but try not to confuse myself.

Congratulations :) As I have said many times before, whatever works for you is good. It also sounds like you have a good medical team, and you are lucky with that (if you read much on this forum you will see that the quality of healthcare people get on the NHS is wildly variable - the postcode lottery, I guess).

Would you care to tell us what sort of management strategy you are on? Is it diet and exercise, or are you on medication? Is your diet low or high carb? I am very interested to find out whether anyone manages to get good BG control on a high carb diet without using medication. My suspicion is that the high carb approach only ever works in conjunction with quite high doses of drugs, but I would be interested to be shown that I am wrong about this - so reports from individuals who have good control are very useful.

I would say probably med carb diet. Trying not to eat too much but not avoiding them, any bread is always wholegrain and i do have cereals at breakfast. Cutting out sugar as much as possible, that is my enemy now, also keepng clear of fat. Lots of fruit and veg, fresh meat, chicken and fish, no fast foods, and no pre-packed meals. On 50mg metaformin twice daily, no particular exercise, but changed from a driving job with hours and therfore meals at all the funny times possible to a more phisical job with fixed hours and meals at regular intervals, which nurse says is by far better for me.
