I'm a third year MS, very thankful for your contributions in the field I read the coffee & relation to diabetes type 2 article on your site it's of a great benefit >>> however I've received 3 questions from a 45 year old man saying that:

1- if I substituted my breakfast with a medium cup of coffee, should I take my usual drug "metformin = glucophage 750 mg" or not?

2- if I measured the usual non fasting serum GLU level acutely and that was found to be 200 and as I mentioned, the usual drug is "metformin = glucophage 750 mg"

<< from my information as 3rd year MS that metformin major function is reduction glu absorption along with the other functions >>
can it(glucophage) be helpful in reducing the serum glu level or what should he do? should he take another preparation as sulfonylurea acutely in this case to get the benefit.

3- is it proven for the olive leaves "water saturated solvent" or "certain mulberry leaves solvent" growing in IRAQ to work in diabetes ?

please clarify this if possible...
thanks in advance

Hi and welcome.

Posters on this forum are not medically qualified, so you shouldn't take our comments as anything more than unqualified opinion. Please refer to your guidance notes, medical text books and medically qualified staff and lecturers when making decisions on prescription drugs.

With that in mind:
Q1: tolerance of metformin varies from person to person, so cannot give an opinion.
Q2: definitely refer to qualified staff, the manufacturer's guidance and notes.
Q3: no idea, I am afraid. There may be studies on these, but you are in a better position to find them than we are.

As this is a forum for people with diabetes it's not something you can ask here. Perhaps read the patient leaflet or even ask google to do your homework for you :p

Hi. Metformin works in several ways but mostly by slightly reducing the level of glucose background output from the liver and it also helps reduce insulin resistance mainly relevant if you have excess weight. Yes, you should follow the Metformin leaflet or doctor's advice ref when to take Metformin. Most people find the standard version causes fewer stomach upsets if taken with food. The Slow Release SR version should be less critical. Metformin only has a small effect on blood sugar, so it your friend continues to have high blood sugar he should discuss additional medication with the doc. As you may be aware from many on the forum, having a lower-carb diet will normally help reduce blood sugar levels.
