3 Year old daughter showing symptoms

Hi Everyone, im new to all of this so hope im posting in the right area. Basically my 3 year old was showing signs of a UTI saying it hurts when she pees, constant thirst and frequent urination. So I took her to the Dr who dip sticked her urine and yes she has an infection but more worryingly it had a strong positive for glucose. They dipped it 3 times to be sure - 2 were strong positives and the other not as strong but still there. Shes had blood tests before for something else and it showed her blood sugars were 8 so was retested again and came back at 6.2 so nothing else was done (meant to be under 7 apparently?) but now the sugar is showing in her urine. The Dr wants to retest her urine again in a week but I cant stop thinking and worrying about it all. Im all abit confused by it all. Any help and advise would be appreciated.
 
Hi. Rather than a urine test a spot finger-prick blood test might be better (or do both). The urine test will show if sugars are generally above 11 mmol (bad) but a spot finger-prick test will show an actual reading. If you are worried you could buy a glucose meter and do some tests yourself - typically 2 hours after a meal and it should be below 8.5 mmol. Hopefully your daughter will tolerate the finger-prick lancet. As T1 can sometimes come on quickly do be prepared to call the GP or go to A&E if your daughter feels unwell or a meter reading goes into the high teens/20s
 
Many thanks for your reply. I did suggest the finger prick test to the Dr but she said she didn't want to put my daughter through that! I did explain that shes fine with things like that but no further tests were done at that stage. I don't really want to buy anything if it is her UTI causing the glucose to show up but its also really playing on my mind.
 
You could perhaps ask a friendly pharmacist if they would mind doing a fingerprick test to confirm. They also have this capability.
 
No one should WANT to put a child (or anyone) through finger prick testing, but it sounds like it's warranted in this case. As @Daibell mentioned, T1D can develop very rapidly and if you have a chance to catch it early on, you should absolutely take it.

If it were me, I'd invest in a basic glucometer and an Accu-Chek Fastclix lancet device (least painful in my opinion). Here in the US, that combo wouldn't cost more than $50, and you could use it to test your daughter's blood sugar maybe 1-2 times a week.

As far as I'm concerned, this only provides you with information. It's not a form of treatment by any means and it's not much different from stepping on a scale 1-2 times a week (although slightly more uncomfortable).

I'd have been more insistent, I think. If she's shown a higher than expected blood sugar before and now has glucose spilling into her urine, then in my unprofessional-purely-as-a-parent opinion, they should have done a fingerprick test to get an actual blood sugar reading.

I understand that they think the glucose might be caused by the UTI, but they don't know that for sure so why not test properly?

The bottom line is that if you believe your daughter may be showing signs of Type 1 then she needs to be seen my a medical professional. The signs of Type 1 are the 4 T's - Thirst, Thinner, Toilet, Tiredness.

Your daughter is very young and probably can't give an accurate report of exactly what she's feeling, so,if in any doubt at all, take her back to the Doctors (see another doctor maybe?).

If it's a false alarm then no ones going to blame you at all and at least you'll have ruled out a potentially serious condition.

Hi @MrsCook1986, I would rather my child had a finger prick test than possibly having to be rushed into hospital. My 2 1/2 y old granddaughter was diagnosed with type 1, she was peeing a lot ( but was still in nappies) tired and at that age we did think she was behaving like the terrible two's, out of sorts and grumpy.too.
You are better off buying your own meter, as the medical profession are reluctant to inflict pain on a child, even if you are 99% sure it is something else like diabetes, my family have been there.
It may be a UTI infection, but keep a close eye on her. Try not to worry too much, I know it will be very hard, but at least you now know some of the signs of diabetes, take care and wishing you all the best x
