Hi Sue,
Just wanted to say hi, and that im also 33, diagnosed back in February. Im on 3 * 500mg metformin a day, but i think this needs upping, as my fasting levels are between 7.2-8.4, and my pre-meal readings are normally about 6, hence i spend the vast majority of the day over what i would like. I started out with a fasting level of 12.4...and my first hbA1c was 13% so i would of been running sugars very high for quite some time i think.
I was 16st7lbs on diagnosis, and am now 15stone. I believe I have 5 stone more to lose before I will be classed as normal weight (if only i was taller!). I dont think the weight i have lost so far has had enough of an impact to reduce my insulin resistance much - definitely something to keep aiming for is to lose weight. (plus i can not tell you how much better i feel in myself having lost a bit of weight and being able to exercise so much easier is wonderful).
Also, i find the best thing to lower my bg is exercise, generally i get the lowest readings all week when ive done a good hour in the gym, and i find this session has effects on lower bg for up to 24 hours after, my fasting reading the next day is always lower than average so long as i dont eat carbs after the gym. I havent found walking does much for my bg level unfortunately, but a 10 minute stint on the exercise bike at home (on non gym nights) does help.
I have found that i really have to cut the carbs back a lot to get readings which are in the 6-8 range. E.g. in the last week I have had a couple of 1/2 slices of burgen bread - 1 whole slice takes me too high, a whole sandwich pushes me up over 10mmol/l. I eat a lot of green veg at dinner to avoid the carbs from potatoes/rice etc which i used to have. I also have a few carrs water biscuits for lunchtimes sometimes - as they are 2.5g carbs each so I can have 4 with some pate or cheese etc.
I have found a couple of snacks which are ok for me, savoury i have either a boiled egg, or mini chicken satay sticks (i have found them in coop and sainsburys so far, they are precooked so you can just get one out the fridge when u nneed it). For a sweet snack, ive taken to the sugar free jelly, i make some little pots of jelly up a couple of times a week and keep them in the fridge. I have tried them with a spoonful of thick double cream this week - oh my, tasty tasty tasty.
Obviously, im still not there as my bg levels are still too high, I expect to get prescribed higher concentration metformin this week when i see the doc, and hopefully this will do the trick and as i lose more weight fingers crossed i will be able to take less medicine.
In terms of your employment - if you decide to disclose your diabetes to your employer, it is covered as a disability in the equality act, and upon disclosure to the employer they must find out if there are extra needs which can help you work effectively, i.e. you must be allowed time to test blood sugar, and correct with food if you need to etc.
