Hi everyone
I just want to give in now. My levels are always between 12 n 15.9 fasting (am) then rest of day 13 - 19. With the odd 22 or as low as 9.7 if ive only had salad or not eaten for a bit. It seems my body cant deal at all with carbs n as the day goes on reading gets higher at 2 hr test with a general increase of 4 ish. Im sick of feeling rubhish n like a sombie in the mornings till about 12pm ish. This sucks im only 33 got years ahead on plus side ive lost 3 lbs tho need to lose 3 stone so im told
Anyone thanks for reading my moans
Much love

Sue

Hi

Never give in. I know it seems hard now but once you have a regimen of diet, exercise and medication that is right for you then you will feel much better about things.

Hi Dd

It may be, if you are absolutely on it with the reduced carbs your body needs some help from meds - it may only be temporary?

Lets see if we can help you first, Can you give us a typical days food?

Hi Sue,

Don't give up - you just need to find what works for you!
I hardly eat any carbs at all either but most of my diet is made up of protein - cheese, eggs, chicken etc...
Salads can be quite high in carbs i.e. I can't eat any tomato or carrots as they both raise my bs. Dressings can be quite bad as well so I only use mayo and lemon juice.
You might also find that you are not eating enough and that your liver keeps dumping sugar to make up for it which would raise your levels. Sometimes when you start low carbing you can feel very sluggish for a few days.
Perhaps starting an exercise regime first thing in the morning might wake you up a bit, help with the levels and the weightloss. :D

Hello Sue.

Just a quick thing. 33 is quite young to develop T2 and 3 stone while it presumably makes you overweight isn't horribly overweight. Did your doctor do a urine test for Ketones when you were diagnosed? Had you lost any weight unexpectedly prior to diagnosis? Roughly 3 in every 100 T2 diagnoses are wrong with people who should be diagnosed as what's called LADA or Type 1.5 being diagnosed as Type 2. If you really have dropped nearly all of the carbs from your diet and 4 weeks in are still seeing most readings in the teens and higher then I would go back to the doctor and point out what I've said and tell him you have cut out most carbs so would be expecting to see your BG levels come down. There are two tests that can be done to prove things either way. The first is called a c-peptide test and the second is called a GAD test. If you did end up as Type 1.5 then nothing to worry about, the treatment is different which is why it needs to be identified as soon as possible. To be a bit more certain why not post up what you are eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner in case there's something you are eating that you aren't recognising as high carb.

Take care and don't give up.

Hi

Thanks everyone. Bn bk to docs this morning n hes given me Gliclazide 80 mg one a day but can up it to 2 if i see no improvement. So im on 500mg of metformin x2 n now this. He says if no joy then ill have to try insulin. Eek!
As for food wise im sicking to things that only have 10g of carbs or under. Ive even got the bread that everyone says to even tho its higher in carbs then id like i only have one slice at a time but it spikes my blood. Im finding breakfast hard cos what ppl say to have makes my bloods go in to the 20's n cos i feel si crapy in the ams i couldnt honest cook a breakfast. I have to b careful cos i have no gall bladder so fats n sat fats have to b kepted under 10g per meal. Dont like nuts so looking fir a snack thats ok but its very hard. Dont see diet nurse till 2/7 . I go bk to work Tuesday n do a 11-3 shift on my feet behind a till no food or water allowed but docs they have to let me rest eat n drink cos my diabetes isnt under control
Its all to hard. As fir wieght im 15 st but to look at meu wouldnt believe me. I find exercise at the mo in the am to hard as i feel so drunk/ hungover achy sleepy double vision u name it
I no ive got to keep going but its so dam hard when i feel like death n having my son house n job all ferls to much on top of my lastest miscarriage n my marriage break up. I so want to reach for the chocolate n wine. :'(:'(

Hi Sue,
Just wanted to say hi, and that im also 33, diagnosed back in February. Im on 3 * 500mg metformin a day, but i think this needs upping, as my fasting levels are between 7.2-8.4, and my pre-meal readings are normally about 6, hence i spend the vast majority of the day over what i would like. I started out with a fasting level of 12.4...and my first hbA1c was 13% so i would of been running sugars very high for quite some time i think.

I was 16st7lbs on diagnosis, and am now 15stone. I believe I have 5 stone more to lose before I will be classed as normal weight (if only i was taller!). I dont think the weight i have lost so far has had enough of an impact to reduce my insulin resistance much - definitely something to keep aiming for is to lose weight. (plus i can not tell you how much better i feel in myself having lost a bit of weight and being able to exercise so much easier is wonderful).
Also, i find the best thing to lower my bg is exercise, generally i get the lowest readings all week when ive done a good hour in the gym, and i find this session has effects on lower bg for up to 24 hours after, my fasting reading the next day is always lower than average so long as i dont eat carbs after the gym. I havent found walking does much for my bg level unfortunately, but a 10 minute stint on the exercise bike at home (on non gym nights) does help.

I have found that i really have to cut the carbs back a lot to get readings which are in the 6-8 range. E.g. in the last week I have had a couple of 1/2 slices of burgen bread - 1 whole slice takes me too high, a whole sandwich pushes me up over 10mmol/l. I eat a lot of green veg at dinner to avoid the carbs from potatoes/rice etc which i used to have. I also have a few carrs water biscuits for lunchtimes sometimes - as they are 2.5g carbs each so I can have 4 with some pate or cheese etc.

I have found a couple of snacks which are ok for me, savoury i have either a boiled egg, or mini chicken satay sticks (i have found them in coop and sainsburys so far, they are precooked so you can just get one out the fridge when u nneed it). For a sweet snack, ive taken to the sugar free jelly, i make some little pots of jelly up a couple of times a week and keep them in the fridge. I have tried them with a spoonful of thick double cream this week - oh my, tasty tasty tasty.

Obviously, im still not there as my bg levels are still too high, I expect to get prescribed higher concentration metformin this week when i see the doc, and hopefully this will do the trick and as i lose more weight fingers crossed i will be able to take less medicine.

In terms of your employment - if you decide to disclose your diabetes to your employer, it is covered as a disability in the equality act, and upon disclosure to the employer they must find out if there are extra needs which can help you work effectively, i.e. you must be allowed time to test blood sugar, and correct with food if you need to etc.
