Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

You can have curry, make it with butter, cream, tomato, onions etc. Throw your veg in the curry like spinach etc. I have my curries with wraps that I buy from the low carb megastore. For breakie its bacon and eggs, or omelette. If you google Jenny Rhul she has a web site with lots of good info on.

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

Hi
It can be overwhelming at first but you will get used to it in time. I am on a low(ish) carb diet. What I did was, with the help of a website called 'my fitness pal', calculate a typical days carb intake using their food database as a guide. I then decided to cut down the carbs by half I felt terrible for a few days whilst my body was adjusting to the lack of sugar but then began to feel pretty good. I then reduced my carbs again to just under 100 for a month then i halved them again. I am now at a point where I feel good and am loosing weight gradually.

I am now and always have been a picky eater, thats not to say I turn my nose up without trying food first, its just I am limited to the foods I do like. The only veg I can like are peas, carrots and iceberg lettuce and potato. I had to cut down drastically on potato and carrot as they send my blood sugar sky high. I can eat bacon and sausage and eggs, thanks to this forum I discovered sugar free jelly which is sooooo sweet and virtually carb free too and this satisfies my sweet tooth. There are also some excellent recipes in the diet sections of this forum.

One important weapon I have in my lifelong wrestling bout with Type 2 diabetes is my SD Codefree blood glucose meter, this has been invaluable for testing which foods I can tolerate and which to avoid. I test just before I eat, and two hours after eating.

One thing to note, different foods effect different people so I can only tell you of my experience and how it has effected me. Dunno if this has helped at all but I am sure someone will be along soon to offer more advice/suggestions.

Good luck and keep asking questions.

Mark

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

strange i noticed last night that after eatting brown bread my blood was 8.5 LATER I HAD 1 ORANCE SATSUMA , 1 APPLE,, 1 BANNANA, AND 2 HOURS LATER IS WAS 5.4

I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THE CARBS WORK OR WHAT THE DAILY ALLOWNCE IS , IM SURPRISED U CAN EAT BACON BECAUSE OF CHOLESTRAL , ?

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

I dont have a problem with cholestral, my last tests showed that as normal. I used to eat lots of junk, crisps, pizza, takeaways, coke, white bread and the likes, my daily carbs were in excess of 300 a day. If I didn't have a cholestral problem with that lot, a few rashers of bacon is hardly going to effect me now. I have a daily carb allowance of 50 nowerdays and I function well on that. My blood sugar levels are nearly always within guidelines now and its only when I try new foods that they go high. I also have a daily walk of around an hour which helps too.

Everyone is different I guess and food also effects folk differently. A lot of folk cant eat bananas here as it sends their sugar levels high, they don't effect me like that so I can eat them no problem.

Sorry I am not very good at explaining things but I didnt mean any disrespect at all just trying to help. :)

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

The body makes its own cholesterol, so eating it makes no difference. All that fruit would rattle my meter. Berries are the ones to go for, raspberry, strawberry, blueberries, all very nice with full fat Greek yogurt and a few nuts.

blood high in the mornings?

hi new diabetic here , for a week I have been trying to monitor my blood ,,, it seems to be high in the mornings when I wake up today it was 6.7 .... but I did have an apple and small handful of nuts for supper round about 9pm ?

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

Diagnozed in 1988 type 1. Dietitian told me i shoul have 60 gr carb breakfast, lunch and dinner, and 30gr snack morning and afternoon.Followed that advice since. But really,if you test the blood sugar regularly, you'll know what to eat and how mach insulin to take. After a while you'll get it sorted.

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

to connie ,,

yes I was diagnosed last week it is high for me in the morning 6.7 I can go through the day with it being 5.5 I think im controlling it well now , but I have a lot to learn I am 17 st and im trying so hard to cut the carbs out well dirst of all I need to know what carbs are ,,,, ive noticed that wholemeal brown bread 2 hors later when I do my blood after food it seems to still be high altho I guess its with in the normal limits 7.7 but other food it comes down to in the 5.5 or 6.5

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

What interested me was to most type 2 diabetics 6.7 BG is acceptable and nothing to worry about. My BG ranges from 5.4 to 6.8 during a day 2 hrs after eating and I feel I am well under control. Perhaps you are worrying too much. Try and read the posts on this forum regarding diet and good and bad carbs you will find it helpful to find an eating plan which suits you. Good luck.

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

One of the best guidea on diet is the Atkins diet book or one of the Atkins meal guides. You don't have to be extreme, but essentially if it's allowed by Atkins, It's good for diabetics. Do try to get used to eating veggies. they are very health giving, because they contain the trace vitamins and minerals we need. Fruits contain sugars and thus they are best eaten in small portions.
then I'd advise newbies to get hold of a blood glucose test meter and learn to use it. That will tell you what foods are doing what to you.

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

You are doing all the right things so well done. It takes a while to get into a routine and eating plan that suits you so don't worry just keep testing 2 hrs after eating to see what foods send your BG high. It is a whole lifestyle change and you will have your ups and downs like we all do but you will soon be in control.

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

Hi Gauri
The SD Codefree meter is probably the cheapest meter, it has an alarm you can set for 2 hours after meals test but its a basic meter. The test strips are around £8 for 100. You can get them on amazon

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Codefree-Glucos ... B0068JAJFS
and also ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CODEFREE-BLOO ... 0903935762

I have found it to be ok for me as I have to buy my own strips and this is the best option for me.

Hope that helps

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

As a newly diagnosed Diabetic your Doctor should offer you access to local support services which will help answer many of your questions. It's worthwhile going on a Diabetes Xpert course usually 6 weeks of 2 hours sessions it will educate you about your Diabetes and also give you the chance to share experiences and info with other Type 2 Diabetics. You should also be referred to the Community Dietician who can help with your food choices and meal planning along with eye checks for Retinopathy and if appropriate the local Podiatrist as keeping your feet in good order is a must.

I was diagnosed in December 2012 and after attending the Xpert course felt much more relaxed about being type 2 as it gives a realistic picture of Diabetes. Personally I've cut out the sugar, the ready meals, fizzy drinks etc and replaced them with veg, fruit and controlling the portion size of my normal meals.

Treat the diagnosis as a positive, an incentive to stay healthy and fit, rather than a limitation and you won't go far wrong. There's always good practical advice available on here, so good luck and keep smiling.

Re: newly diagnosed struggling with what to eat

how do you mean trial and error ,, if I eat something let say my blood before eating is 5.8 and after 2hours its 8.00 is this the way to find out how fast your glucose converts 2 hours later ??/ is this how you can see what food your eating if it agrees with you or not? if your blood sugar doesn't come down within the 2 hours , is that the sort of food to try and avoid?
