Re: HOW CAN ONE EAT SAUSAGE ,BACON,ECT IF THERE 17ST IN WEIG

:P thats great doug well done for weight loss ,, do you take your blood sugars before and after meals? what are your readings like ?

Re: HOW CAN ONE EAT SAUSAGE ,BACON,ECT IF THERE 17ST IN WEIG

Yep dr bernstien is type 1 . But his methods are almost the same for both just fine tuned for the diffrent types. But you csn be insulin dependant type 2. Type 2 is a progressive disease and many end up taking insulin . In a little over a month by low carbing I have dropped nearly a stone and my bgs have come down from a dase reading of 14 to 15 down to usually between 7 & 8.
5 AND SOMETIMES LOWER IF I HAVE BEEN swimming say 6.4 .but I was also spiking upto and above 24.9 I now no longer realy spike and probably dont go much over 9 ish . Unless I go for carbs as I did last week on 2 occasions 1buiscuit took my up to 11.? Cant remember exact number but it was a lg short bread buiscuit with chock pices and sugar on top so to be fair was expecting higher I did however stay high for 4/5 hours.the real supprise was a single corn on the cob took me up to 12.9 which isnt good. But diffrent peaple react diffrently to diffrent foods and indeed diets . Testing is essential. And remember yes you need to get your weight down as do I but your real enemy at the moment is not the fat but your high bgs. Its them you need to tackle first.

I did initially, to find what foods I reacted badly to, when I tried to reduce my blood sugars by quitting the "bad" carbs.
Potatoes, root veg, some lentils, all very bad,
(Somewhere between 6 and 9 after meals I considered good, into double figures bad).
I tuned what I ate from that, but concentrated on reduced carbs, and ate the fat.
HBA1C was around 7%, so ok, but I was gaining weight.

I suddenly started increasing more around easter, for no particular reason I could find.
The doctor had a fairly simple view, if I use about 2000 calories a day, that's what I need, any more I'll store.
Refered to a dietician who said the same.
So scales every moring, 800 to 1200 calories a day.

So, no/very low fat, low carb, lots of low calorie bulky food (like mushrooms etc), lots of salad over summer.

That worked for me, and my HBA1C is down to 5.6%, I felt better enough to join a gym, and have probably lost over a couple of pounds a week steadily for the last 4 months.
My target now is another stone and a half, which will make it 4 stone overall.
Then I'll be faced with the dilemma of actually having to increase my calorie intake!
I have lost my taste for fat now though, so sausage may not be back on even then.

Sandy - listen to Whompa and ignore me - wish you all the best.

I don't think any diet advice should be ignored.
What works for one doesn't always work for others.
High fat/low carb certainly didn't work for me, your type of diet sounds similar to one that did though.
I would echo the advice on watching what veg you have, root veg are a bad one for me, I replace them with cauliflower, broccoli, some types of beans, and make a soup as well.
Cabbage and kale are another staple.

Re: HOW CAN ONE EAT SAUSAGE ,BACON,ECT IF THERE 17ST IN WEIG

lol
JEWELS ALL ADVICE IS GOOD ADVICE AS DOUG SAID WHAT WORKS FOR ONE DOESNT WORK FOR ANOTHER ,

i am still a newbie to this and weighing up things , i have done myself a list breakfast lunch dinner bf fod and af and what i have eaten , i think this way for me i will be able to see what i can tolerate , i was a bit sad today altho we have food in the house and being near end of week , we didnt have the low carb things , so i had to have 2 slices of seeded bread , 2 slices pkt chiken , i felt guilty , and when i looked at the carbs for each slice  18 carbs in each slice of bread , its been an hour now , i had to do my bs earlyier just to see how high it went and my bs is 7.7 so i will try in another hour that will be my 2 hours ,
im still struggling sometimes but im getting there slowly ..
doug what do you mean by root veg???? potaotes, carrots, cabbage?????? Arnt they all root veg ?

Re: HOW CAN ONE EAT SAUSAGE ,BACON,ECT IF THERE 17ST IN WEIG

when i had my hbac1 wompa , it was 6.7 just over ? i think 2 years before i was a bordeline 6.5,, when i go back in 3months time for my hbac1 test ,, what are they expecting the levels to be ???
and thanks for your great advice on food also

Re: HOW CAN ONE EAT SAUSAGE ,BACON,ECT IF THERE 17ST IN WEIG

Root veg is a veg that grows as part of the root system of a plant eg under ground . Cabbage is not a root veg (it is however minging lol) and the general rule of thumb is if it grows under its a no go but if grows above should be ok . But remember this is not an absolute as in the case of onions and fruit sorry but I don't know about cabbage. But should be easy to find out. Ps dont give jewels a hard time I think it came over sharper than she intended and even said thankyou for recomending the dr bernstien book. Its quite easy to think you have said one thing and it comes across as somthing diffrent . And sometimes my own passion can come across as belligerence and I really dont intend to be that way.

7.7 isn't bad within 2 hrs of eating.
Seeded bread occasionally suits my diet, and pkt chicken can be good or bad, have a look at the label to make a judgement.
That's one reason why my diet works for me, it is flexible, and if I have to eat, I can. I have to work away for the day occasionally, a Tesco sandwich or KFC salad is ok then.
You have to find a diet that suits you, and if low carb doesn't, you won't succeed with it.
It has taken me a year to find one that suits me, and works for me. It may not be perfect, but it's achieving the right result, and more importantly, I can maintain it.

Any root veg is a veg that you eat the part the grows underground, potatoes, turnip, carrot etc.
Good ones for me are beans, broccoli, cabbage, kale, peppers (red and green),
And if you like bread, I found soya and linseed Burgen bread was one of the better ones, although I don't eat it anymore.

Again not an awful number.

6.5 to 7.5% is the acceptable range for diabetics, 4% to 6% is "normal"

They expect the number to be in the 6.5 to 7.5 range, and less than it was before.
Going up isn't the end of the world, it just means something needs to be addressed, whether its diet, meds, or lifestyle will be assessed then.
Going down means keep doing what your doing normally.

Re: HOW CAN ONE EAT SAUSAGE ,BACON,ECT IF THERE 17ST IN WEIG

Douglass is quite right what workes for one doesnt mean it will for the next person . I went down the low carb route because my bgs where very high and making me rather ill and I was terrified that I would be put on insulin ( which would mean loss of licence and of job) so my primary consern is lowering bgs which have come down massivly. (But still not quite enough) any weighth loss although welcome and helpfull is at moment secondary or byproduct to what I am doing. But the real head messer is that somtimes a diet will work for a while and then not only stop working but actually have a negative effect in regards to desired outcome. Try things and if they dont work for you discard them and try somthing else . But what ever way you do it you have to ruthless and pretty rigidly stay the course.

Re: HOW CAN ONE EAT SAUSAGE ,BACON,ECT IF THERE 17ST IN WEIG

what works for me is low carb high fat hehe fry ups are a staple part of this, my next door neighbour has a brilliant cafe and she cant believe i was losing the weight whilst sitting in her cafe 4 times a week stuffing my face with her big breakfast, she practically holds me up to her other customers and says "how much have you lost, go on tell them" lol i eat fat at every opportunity, never look at calories either, its so easy once your used to it, sure i still miss bread but so what, im actually starting to think im "cured" :) (ok controlled but i have cheated with surprisingly good effects recently)

Re: HOW CAN ONE EAT SAUSAGE ,BACON,ECT IF THERE 17ST IN WEIG

The other problem I find with high fat diets is I need to live off rabeprazole, otherwise I get chronic acid reflux.
I've rarely taken any since I cut the fats out.
(Plus the cost of eating a fry up in a café everyday would bankrupt me)

i luckily dont seem to have a bad reaction to the fats, and the cost of a few fry ups a week compared to the 15 takeaways a week i used to eat, well theres no comparison, i could eat that much money in chocolate and crisps a day let alone the takeaways

Re: HOW CAN ONE EAT SAUSAGE ,BACON,ECT IF THERE 17ST IN WEIG

Omeprozol o how l love you.
You let me eat fat
You let me eat stew
You let eat spices
And anything else I want too
super hot chillies
Or cans full of spam
Fine fillet steak
And char broild lamb.
You are my saviour from the hole in my diagram.

Ode to Omeprozol.
Verry poor attempt at poetry but hay its not easy to wax lyrical about something with such a name

Been on it for years and couldnt live with out it . If you need it you'll know what i mean

Same stuff, proton pump inhibitor.

I'd been on it for years, so know exactly what you mean.
I don't take it since I quit the high fats, as I don't need it any more.
No acid reflux, not missing it.

So stew,
spices
super hot chili
steak

still on

fat,
spam,
lamb

firmly off.

Any less meds is an advantage in my eyes.

(What veg do you use in the stew, and what beans in the chili? Most of my carbs come from those, and I'd be more than happy to use a low carb version)
