5-HTP ? From W W

Something like this was banned for years after some people had nasty side-effects. The websites like WedMed document this.
While the side-effects were thought to be due to some contaminant in the manufacture of the substance there is still caution expressed on various websites.
It was taken to improve sleep. Appetite suppression is not mentioned.
Why risk using? it is my thought.

That 'research' they refer to - which they have misrepresented, by the way - was done in rats (Carnevale et al, Phytomedicine, 2010). I don't have a link to the actual paper, which is probably behind a paywall anyway, but this https://www.focussupplements.co.uk/blogs/updates/the-science-behind-5-htp talks a bit about it. I can't find anything where it's been demonstrated, in a controlled trial, to suppress appetite in humans, being usesd more for its antidepressant effects instead. Personally, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot broom handle, but then again I am on several other medications that it could mix with.

If it boosts Seratonin, then it may deplete Dopmine at the same time. There used to be a fad to slim using amphetemine (i.e. speed) as a similar suppressant. Sound like this may be doing a similar trick, and could come under the class of Legal Highs. Beware, even though it may be WW selling it, that does not guarantee it to be tested fully for safety. As with any supplement that is unregulated and unmonitored there may be problems, and you will have no legal redress. Caveat Emptor.

Remember that WW also sell other products that many here would find to be harmful for diabetic use, Will Iceland be selling this, I wonder?

I have bought it from Holland and Barrett when i stopped smoking, had no effect at all and didn't help with the depression. Rubbish.
