Right I am totally comitted to positive action :D , but

if i reduce my calories (and carbs to 40) I loose wieght (still need to loose about 8 stone) but my bg numbers are too high and sometimes get higher due to probably liver dumps,

if I eat more I dont loose weight adn my wieght and bg numbers stay the same average 8.7,

I have totally changed the way I eat, and what I eat, I have tried to understand all this,
trying to work all of this out, is like trying to solve the bl**dy mystery of life. Ive given up ever being able to eat what I want again. Also I have accepted that I might/will/wont/probably will get complications. I have accepted that this is going to p**s me off the rest of my life, I have accepted the whole 9 yards. It just SEEMS no mater what you do, you could wear a hair shirt all day and still you wont be able to help yourself. Nothing I seem to do is good enough.

What are the secrets of the 5% club. :D

I want to help myself, so what do I do next. :D

Hi Red,

Your profile says that you're diet only. It might be time to consider a helping hand from the meds if you're looking to keep tighter numbers.

The answer's 42
Sensibly
cut portions, cut carbs and exercise. The exercise needn't be difficult or expensive. Walking, seated exercise with resistance bands, swimming, cycling. All will help. It needs to happen at least every other day. If it's not too strenuous, daily is best
the BGs can come down fairly fast, but weight loss may take longer. Mine's been stuck for a year. I'm now cutting calories too, to get it moving again.
I may not be slim, but I'm fairly fit. Recovery from exercise is instant and I'm VERY WELL. Not even a sniffle for months. ( I exclude a minor attack of cycitis in case someone reminds me. It only lasted a few days.)

If you're 8st overweight - lo-carbing should have a HUGE effect on you. I'd expect the weight to fall off you. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you have to cut calories to lose weight. Believe it or not, the more fat you eat, the more weight you will lose (as long as you keep the carbs to a minimum, and make sure that any carbs you do eat are from nutrient rich vegetables and salad).

Check out this thread for some real life examples:

ok thanks,
I have made a decision,
I am going to buy an exercise bike on sunday, and start exercising, although I think I will be slow.

secondly I am going to try the low carb lowish protien higher fat diet I have just read about,

and then if that doesnt work say in about 10 weeks , i will get the medications to help me. it feels nicer to have a plan at least,

only question that I have to find out is waht is the fat that you can eat, is it any fat? butter, lard, hambergers? is there a list to a link where there is a link. on the thing I just read I think i am eating too much protein and no hardly fat, so fingers crossed. thanks

I'm aiming for the 5% club, but am not there yet...

I would say the weight loss with a low carb diet is most effective if you are in a ketotic state; meaning that your body is metabolising fats and protein to produce necessary glucose. This is a good thing, by the way, and is very different from ketoacidosis. See if your doctor will prescribe you ketone test strips and if not you can buy them in the chemist.

Beware though carbohydrate creep; milk in tea, coffee, white vegetables, beer, 'no added sugar' products that actually have lots of natural sugar, the list goes on.

With a low carb diet there really is no need for a hair shirt; last night I had chicken Caesar salad with bacon, anchovies and lots of parmigiana and a very creamy home made dressing and some nice wine too. Hardly prison rations.

The other thing though is exercise; I've got out of the habit recently and my weight loss has just stopped in its tracks, even with consistent ketones in my urine. Haven't put any more on though.

It's a change for sure, but you may well end up feeling much better for it than you did.

All the best

I bought an exercise bike. When I bought it here were very few that I could seriously consider buying because of my weight. I actually got one from John Lewis for under 300 quid, but you do need to look at the weight. The cheaper ones in Argos are a lot of money for something a bit tatty, that moght not last that long even if you are inside the weight limits.

I am pleased with mine - a Bremshy - but you do need to look carefully before you make your choice - it is a lot to spend if you don't use it, but I think buying a cheaper one would have been a false economy.

Totally agree with Spiral with not getting a cheap exercise bike, we actually have a cross trainer, tried it first in John Lewis, but then ordered it online a lot cheaper. Actually we were going to order it in John Lewis but they weren't very helpful so we walked, greatful now as they saved us a hundred quid. But the cheap ones just didn't feel right.
