Hi everybody
I phoned my surgury this week and asked them if they could confirm that I have had type 1 diabetes for 50 years, they told me it was not 50 years but 51 years. I was told I was diagnosed in 1961.
I have asked for this in writing, but they informed me the letter from my GP would cost

I have been told that at 50 years of diabetes you are entitled to a medal, does anybody know who I have to apply to for the medal.

Hi Kev,
your medal comes from Diabetes UK
Your consultant will have your details on record and I'm sure they would be more than happy to provide the info as s/he will be pleased to give publicity to how well you have done.

I bet it was the receptionest who told you the GP would charge. Ask your own GP to his face bet s/he wont charge.
Is not the info on your letter from the consultant? I know mine states I was diagnosed in 1965. So that is proof.

and congratulations!
what happens when you get the medal, is there a kind of award ceremony or do they just send it in the post? please let us know what happens.

Hi Everybody
I wrote to my GP asking him for a letter to confirm my 51 years of type 1 diabetes, I told him that i needed this in writing so I could send it to Diabetes Uk.
After about a week of waiting for this letter, I decided to phone the Surgary, I finally got to talk to his secatary who said that if I wanted a letter to confirm my 51 years I would have to pay a fee of £16.50
I could not beleive what she said and I repeated to her you want me to pay £16.50 for a letter just to confirm my 51 years of Diabetes, her reply to me was that my GP writing a letter would come under me being a private patient but she told me that she can print a piece of paper of the system, which states my name, address and year diagnosed.
i picked this piece of paper up from the Surgary tonight and it stated MY Name, My Address and in
1961 Type 1 diabetes mellitus. i have written a letter to Diabetes UK tonight and attached the printed copy. I will have to now wait and see if I get the medal. I will keep you all up to date.

Well done matey !!! Ypou deserve a knighthood let alone a medal.......

£16.50!!! Maybe your GP thinks he's a solicitor :lolno:
Glad you got that printout instead and congrats on a grand achievement

Hi Bernie & wsmum
Thank you for your nice comments, the people at work said the same thing about my GP saying does he think he is a solicitor.
Anyway my wife posted the letter and printout today and I can now only wait to see if I get the medal.
i have pasted a copy of my letter for the viewers to read but have edited out some things address etc.
