67 years old and scared of the future!

Hello fellow sufferers,

Today my suspicions were confirmed by my doctor telephoning me and ordering me to stop consuming any sugars!

It has been at least a year since the symptoms started making their presence known but only 3 days since the blood tests confirmed the situation.

I have been given an appointment with a Diabetes expert for Tuesday next week but I have been getting very confusing information since my doctor called.

Can someone here explain just what giving up "all Sugars" actually means?

I DO understand that my Tea and my Cereal must be used with a sweetener, which I have purchased but what about all the other things?

I am drinking like a fish, no not alcohol, loads of water with Lime Cordial, Low calorie Bitter Lemon or just plain tap water.

Without guidelines in the form of a list I just get more and more confused!

It is a minefield just trying to negotiate this web site.

If you have just a few moments please can someone advise in a list form what I should be avoiding?

Sincerely Peter.

Hi there! I felt the same when I was first diagnosed. The best bits of advice I can give are as follows:
Get a meter. The best one is the SD code free because the strips are the cheapest around. If you go to the chemists the strips are £25 per pot for the meters they sell. Although you must buy the codefree on line, you can buy the strips in bulk eg 5 pots for £25 if you use the discount code. First class postage is 50p.

I kept a food diary. In the beginning, test before food and then 1 hour and 2 hours after. This gives you an idea of what foods you can and can't eat. After a month or two you will have a pretty good idea and will need to test less often though I usually test a couple of times a day or if I feel funny or unwell.
I also followed a low carb diet. LCHF worked for me. It's easy, don't need to weigh anything or carb or calorie count and the food is filling. I have lost 3 St 10lbs since January. See

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

My sincere thanks to all for all the information. To Scandichick, takk for hjelpen!

My wife and I are slowly getting our brains around the sugar content and acting accordingly.

Fluids appear to open more problems that I had ever considered, following the advice here and elsewhere I am trying "Diet Coke" (Blah!)

Drinking low calorie Bitter Lemon since it is a favourite.

Foods have set up a different set of calculations since my wife is a superb cake/biscuit maker and has already prepared all those wonderfully but dangerous Christmas items!

Anyway, I am beginning to calm down somewhat and my drinking of water is slowing noticeably.

Thankyou again for all your help. Peter.

UPDATE!

Friends,

Like many others the initial struggle to get the numbers down has succeeded in that instead of 37 I am yo-yoing between 8-10 which is what my doctor wanted in the first instance.

I realise that it must go lower and obviously am working towards that end.

The doctor doubled my dosage which I am assuming is the reason for my dizziness and nausea, I will find out for certain on Thursday on my next appointment..

I just wish to thank, again, everyone for the welcome and the supportive comments.

Warmest regards, Peter.

Well Peter that's a great improvement you should be proud of yourself.
Stick at it and you will soon reap the benefits
And good luck with your next appointment.
