......Banting and Best administered insulin into their first patient Leonard Thompson.......we owe these pioneers so much!

I agree noblehead, I owe these gentleman everything and I am shure they are looking down on us

Kev

Hard to believe that the first person received insulin only 39 years before you were diagnosed Kev! :o

Anyone interested there's a brilliant write-up in this months Balance from DUK about the discovery of insulin, at the bottom of the feature there is a timeline of events starting with the discovery of insulin in 1921 right up to 2008 where Islet cell transplantation was made available on the NHS.

Is there anybody who knows more about this from the article above "The second product being invested in by JDRF is a molecule which sits on the fingertips of the patient, releasing insulin into the blood whenever it is needed." ?
I also heard about SmartInsulin (insulin that work only when your BG is high) but there is no info about date to release.

Not heard of the second product and as far as I'm aware the SmartInsulin is still undergoing trials...... so no release date as yet.

I always wonder why people don't believe they have a family history of diabetes. I think the reason for that is that they all died a generation or 2 ago. What an incredible milestone. Watching the discovery of insulin, can you imagine a researcher getting approval to kill hundreds of dogs and release a product within such a short amount of time today.

Thanks for the vidoe's Jen,

Thoroughly enjoyed watching The Quest and it's a must-see for those who don't know about the discovery of insulin. Banting does say they would be seen as murderers if the world knew what they were doing with the dogs, but on the other-hand were they to be successful then they could save millions of lives......which undoubtedly they have!

The second video was strange......... but very clever just the same! :)

Yes, I know the second video is a bit odd. The quick version of a long story. I know I've seen a longer history somewhere on how they managed to mass produce insulin. I'll look for it one day. Maybe we'd have cures or better treatment for more diseases/conditions with radical experiments and researchers becoming their own authority. A good or a bad thing?

I found the docudrama on you tube. It is called Glory Enough For All. Might be a little too much drama and not enough documentary.

Thanks Jen I'll have a look over the weekend, just on my lunch-break now so time is limited.
