A bit fed up

I've fallen off the wagon a few times. Been strictly back on for around 10 days now (3 weeks prior to that was low carb but not massively strict. I was also ill for a time and on my period, both of which will have raised my blood sugar.

Typical day
20 minutes moderate exercise on my exercise bike
Breakfast: Coffee with double cream (might have one at home, then one at work 2 hours later)
Lunch: cucumber, 4/5 cherry tomatoes, cheese, nuts, sliced meat or tuna
Dinner: Usually some meat (beef/chicken) green veg, often cheese
Evening snack: Sometimes Oppo ice cream with whipped cream (maybe 3/4 times a week?)
Ad hoc snacks are unusual for me as metformin dulls my appetite. But I might have cheese or nuts.
Sometimes i'll have a slice of LivLife bread (4g per slice) with butter after work.
20 minutes moderate exercise on my exercise bike (30 if i'm not too tired after work)

When I was first diagnosed I pretty much did this exact routine, and my blood sugar dropped to pre-diabetic levels within 2/3 weeks. Which is why I decided to take the same approach again.

Now my blood sugar is astronomically high (18ish in the morning, dipping to 12 by the evening) and hasn't budged in a few days.

Maybe i'm just being impatient again (I was bad for this when I was first diagnosed). I'm pretty stressed at work, so cortisol could account for a few mmols, but not to this extent!

Not sure if I even have a question, to be honest. Sometimes it's just good to get it out (and spare my husband my moaning).
If anything stands out as the culprit, please point it out.
Otherwise i'm just having a whinge.

Especially as a colleague just brought a full bag of sweets and chocolates into work. (16 muffins, 3 M&S treat tubs, 2 huge packs of crisps, 2 boxes of chocolates).

There's 10 of us.....

Your diet looks excellent to me, although I would try to stop the snacking and allow your pancreas to have a good rest between meals. 10 days is no time at all. How often do you test? The test before the evening meal is the one to take note of. This is usually the lowest of the day - unless of course you have been snacking in the afternoon.

Keep going, it will happen if you stick to it. Levels don't trend downwards in a linear fashion, they tend to reduce in steps - sudden drop, bit of a plateau, sudden drop and so on.

My snacking is relatively infrequent as metformin has diminished my appetite quite substantially.
  • I test on waking
  • Mid-morning a couple of hours after my coffee and cream (to see how my dawn phenomenon is playing out that day, sometimes I find if it's still higher than I expect that another boost of coffee and cream can stop it rising)
  • First bite - lunch
  • 2 hours later
  • First bite - Dinner
  • 2 hours later
  • Then occasionally before bed, but it's sporadic and more out of curiosity to see what various lengths of exercise do.
Thank you for the reassurance. I should be more patient.
