Hi all

I was diagnosed with both underactive thyroid and type 2 diabetes in March 2010 so am not a newbie to diabetes. I was doing good with my blood levels and HBA1C's being under 7 like the guidelines say. My GP won't give me any strips to test blood but luckily my parents give me theirs.

My blood sugars are now being 13.8 before bed and 9 in a morning. I am not on any medication. Does it sound like I am now needing medication?

Thanks

Alison

I feel dreadful whining about my BG's now after reading your problems. I had a HbA1c of 7.0 at diagnosis and went straight onto Metformin. It may be an idea to speak with your Doctor, and see what s/he says.

As for getting strips, few of us do, we are all told we don't need to test, so buy our own strips and meters and test anyway.

Good luck.

Hi Alison I am T1 also underactive thyroid on levothyroxine. I am not clued up with T2 but I do know that they keep an eye on my thyroid function aswell. Have you had it checked recently? :)

I last had my diabetes checked in May last year. My TSH was tested at the same time and it had gone through the roof so I had to have my dose increased another two times but because my diabetes was under control in May it hasn't been checked since. I will call my GP surgery tomorrow and see if I can get an appointment with our diabetic nurse.

I shouldn't laugh  but what are we like HBA1C this, BG that, TSH this, T4 that!! you have to have a mind like I dont know what to get your head round all of this!!! What are we like eh!! ......Hope you get on ok with the nurse tomorow.. :)

LOL I know. Some of us know more about our own conditions more than our own doctors! Only they can prescribe the drugs

Thyroid function tests are usually repeated about 4 weeks after a change in dosage of Thyroxine! :eh:

Hi alison, have you tried lowering the starch and sugar in your diet yet? If you want to avoid high bg's, that's a good place to start and can have a dramatic effect. Do your parents low carb?

Yes on Tuesday I changed some things in my diet and this morning my blood sugar was 6.3!. On Wednesday it was 9.5 and on Thursday morning it was 7.9 so it has come down in the few days I changed in my diet. I am due my diabetic check at my GP's in May so not much longer to wait and am hoping it has come down some more. I don't live with my parents any more but I do know my dad is not as good as my mum in his diet.
