ok ok - that WAS a bit cheesy!! But anyhow ....... just wanted to share something, which to the "oldtimers" here might be old news, but bear with me, I am only 3 months down the road!
Having intitially done well on my own (my GP is "old school" and will not hear anything than "conventional medicin" works!), I manged to find a diet level that worked for me - loosing weight and with exercise and feeling much better, generally. I have had the odd day where I have "fallen off" and had way too many carbs, but also manged to keep loosing weight.
Well, that was up to last weekend! I had been sent a large bag of strong Danish lakrids and simply could not resist opening it!! Oh dear me! I had 5 days where I went completely of my trolley!! Having lakrids in the house and also eat rye cripsbread with butter and cheese - and of course my chocolate monster then kicked in and the Lindt 85% took a beating too!!
I have calcuated that I would consume around 2000 cals and between 130-160 carbs each day for 5 days. Interestingly though my Bg would never go above 6.2 after 2 hours of eating!! But I put on 2 lb in those 5 days, despite walking 10k each day!!!! CHOCK HORROR!!!!
Today I am back on the straight and narrow (and happy with it too!), but these 5 days clearly showed me that I cannot tolerate such high levels of carbs, though some will say they are not very high in general but I think I just found my limitations. I am back to around 60 carbs a day and loosing weight, but long term (I mean for the rest of my life) it looks as if I need to remain very firmly 80-100 carbs per day to maintain my weight and of course also keep a firm eye on the cals etc.
I would be interested in hearing from the long term experienced here how they have found weight maintainance to be linked to their carbs intake and how they found their levels.
Also, I have seen our Dietician at our local hospital and it was very funny!!! She had a trainee with her. Well, a very long story short - the Dietician was VERY impressed with my "programme". Extremely happy with my diet and my balance of cals, carbs and fats. Deeply impressed with my commitment to be proactive in my management of the diabetes and weightloss - though she did say to be careful about the speed I loose the weight. But her comment to the trainee was "you will probably never see another patient like this one. Please can I keep you and put you in a cabinet and show you off as an example on how to go about managing a T2"? We all had a good laugh, but I was happy she gave me such positive feedback. AND she was pro self management/testing too and not very impressed with my BP. Unuseally, she has offered to see me again in October to help me plan my "new diet" going from weightloss to maintanene and into the future, some she has never done before (I was told by a secretary!).
Next full blooods in early Aguust and then to do "battle" with my GP over teststrips etc. But even he was taken aback by the report from the Dietician, so there might just be a small chance I will get some teststrips aftera all!! Well, we shall see, but I know that with the Bg levels I have currently I can expect a Ac1 below 7 - at least I hope so (!!) - that and my weight loss, would really blow his "conventional medicin is best" right out of the water!!
