a couple of days away and a couple of experiments

This week we spent a couple of days away in our caravan. It rained from beginning to end but that's another story...this was the first trip away since my pre diabetic diagnosis. In a caravan in the pouring rain what else is there to do but eat...or I would have done pre diagnosis. I did have a slice of toast (burgen) each morning for breakfast but previously I would have had a few slices of white bread and jam. I made some low carb chocolate and peanut butter brownies to take away (delicious by the way) so was still low carb and I took fruit and yoghurt for breakfast. I was shocked to see that shloer has more carbs (sugar) than pepsi - I didn't drink either!

I tried a couple of experiments to see how my bg would be affected:

1. I had a child's portion of fish and chips. pre meal my bg was 4.5. after 1 hour it was 7.5, after 2 it was 7.3

2. sausage, bacon and 3 spoons of baked beans. pre meal my bg was 5.6. after 2 hours it was 7.1, after 2 1/2 hours it was 5.8

back to normal eating now I am home!

I thought at least one knowledgeable person would commnent on the above foods: good, bad or indifferent? :(

I would imagine that any non diabetic would spike to about 7.5 after one hour but would return to base by 2 hours, so the fish and chips not so good but OK occasionally. I see nothing wrong at all with the baked beans meal. Feel free to argue with me!

those were my thoughts too but just wanted to see what others thought. I should have just asked!

If you look at the 'official guidelines' we should be aiming for 8.4 or below after eating. After both of those meals you were comfortably below that, so in my opinion, both meals would be ok. For what it's worth I'd be happy with those numbers and I'd consider both meals to be 'on the menu'.

semiphonic - I love your 'chocolate box' reference! Must remember that one.

Don't be disheartened with the fish and chips. The fat in the fish and chips slows down the digestion so it keeps you up higher for longer. The numbers are well within the norm and mirror what I see in both my response and the same for my non-diabetic wife. I think you have got good responses from both your meals

Here is an example of my fish and chips
Fri May 30 12:12:00 BST 2014 4.7 false true 3.2 fish and chips, carrots, nuts, 2 square chocolate, 2 dates, 2 handfuls peanuts
Fri May 30 13:38:00 BST 2014 7.2 false false 1.4333333333333333
Fri May 30 14:48:00 BST 2014 6.5 false false 2.6
Fri May 30 16:29:00 BST 2014 5.6 false false 4.283333333333333

No idea what that means.

@Andrew Colvin am I being dense, but I don't understand your results. :(

Those are data lines from Andrew's app he has written, so there's a bit of extra stuff in there. For the purposes of this thread though, you have the date and time, then immediately after is Andrew's blood score at that time. On the first line, the list of food may have been what Andrew ate for lunch at that time. Hungry chap!! The following three are the post prandial scores.

Of course, my amateur Miss Marple impression may have just gone terribly wrong. :)

Thank you @AndBreathe I did suss it out eventually! It was the false false true bits and the numbers following I didn't understand!

He certainly did eat a lot!

The true/false stuff relates to pre/post prandial calculations I reckon.

You are all very correct. Sorry I had just got in from work ate my tea and was answered a couple of posts and was off to bed. Was being lazy and thought you would work it out - sorry

Now you know why my weight loss has slowed to one lb a week
