Hello,

I have done a few posts about my supposed sciatica and no improvement really, my doctors dont really want to seem to know and just palm me off with pain killers which arent really doing anything. The pain is unbearable now, I cannot even cough without wincing in pain and walking with a limp. The pain does get a little bit better sometimes but not completely. So I was wondering do I go to A&E to see what they can do or to the Walk in Centre? I do not know whether to go because I dont want them to think that it is not an Emergency etc.

HELP

Hello

I had sciatica in November and it lasted almost 8 weeks which is exactly what the GP said. I totally relate to your pain, it is excruciating. I was drowsy most do the day from the pain killers but up half the night as I was in so much pain. Walking helped as did going up and down the stairs.

After a couple of weeks, I started physiotherapy which was the best thing. After the first session I was pain free for a few hours which was incredible. I had physio twice a week to start with then it was reduced as I was coping with managing the exercises on my own. Another horrible side effect was the numbness in my toes which has now virtually gone.

Take care with painkillers as some make you hallucinate and others can make you additive to them.
Hope this info helps

Hello,

Thank you for the feedback! :) Erm I have had it for about 6 months :( I am only 19! I have been to the doctors 3 times for it and he just keeps telling me to take naproxen despite the fact they aren't working :( and I don't what else I can really take due to being on citalopram. I dont know what to do! :(

Hi Nicola,

I too suffer from sciatica from time to time. You could ask the pharmacist for advice mine is pretty helpful. It would also save you a long wait.

Worth a go. Good luck & hope you feel better soon. :)

I would go into the walk-in centre as it's not classed as an emergency. You never know, they may be far more helpful than the GP and might refer you to physiotherapist/neurologist

are you only dealing with one GP's option? if so, get a second option from another Doctor, if you feel you're still not being taken seriously and you're concerned with regards to the lack of care being taken with pain management then ask to speak to the practice manager.

Also make sure your complaints are in writing and keep copies of everything you send and receive with regards to anything to do with your complaint.

I'm really sorry you're having to deal with this, I honestly am. I also hate not being taken seriously too. sometimes you have to kick some **** before anyone really listens!

Good Luck, and take care.

if this has been going on for 6 months you really do need to see someone else. thats not acceptable if the treatment you are being told to follow is not worth the prescription it's written on.

I will probably go tonight or tomorrow then, ah well atleast its not for DKA for once haha!

call up a&e and ask them what times of the day tend to be busy and what times quiet, I'm sure theres a pattern, you may save yourself a long wait

According to someone at work apparently A&E wont do anything as she has suffered the same thing but that I need to go to a chiropractor :(

I'd go back to your docs and see someone else. If you have to get you point across bust into tears, especially if its a male doctor, they hate that! ;)
I wouldn't choose to go to A & E on a fri night I would imagine it would be pretty busy. If they are still being useless maybe try NHS direct, maybe they can put you in touch with the specialist help you need?

Good luck.
