Hello all,
still trying to get my blood sugars under control (been dietetic for about 6 months now), i was recently in hospital for another medical issue and while there met some of the diabetic team (my own diabetic nurses are in a different hospital) i had been previously testing my blood sugars 2 hours after eating but was told during this stay to test after 4 hours as the insulin is still working for 4hours. i am finding it hard to get both readings (2hour and 4hour) right , eg ill be 6 before food , 9, 2 hours after and then back at 5/6 at 4hours or ill be 6 before , 6 at 2hours and the 3.7 at 4 hours so not sure what i should do.

Also i have noticed lately i start going low in the evenings , which i think is caused by my basal insulin (toujeo) this did not always happen but has been for the last 6 or so weeks. and i currently take two 25 grams snacks, with no insulin, an hour or two apart to stop me going low in the evenings.

im on about 40 units of novorapid - take 1 unit for every 2.5 carbs
and 8 units toujeo was reduced from 12 to 9 , and then i reduced it to 8 when i started going low in the evenings (as i was in hospital when it started, and i was given large doses of steroids while in hospital so maybe that started it off ? but i have been out of hospital for over a month now.

I was in the Hospital for 2 weeks getting Chemotherapy and the Prednisone shot my BG to 25mmol and that Started the Novorapid and I haven’t stopped yet. Did the Chemotherapy give me Type 1 Diabetes? I will never know. It’s been 2 years.

hi cliodb i take 1 unit of insulin to every 10 grams of carb as when i was first diagnosed i was on fixed doses i am waiting to go on the dafne course in april then i will be able to work my insulin to carb ratio better .is 1unit of insulin to 2,5carbs seems a lot to me but im not an expert hope you get it sorted soon :)

I'd do what the healthcare professionals recommended, test about 4 hours after the bolus dose not 2.

after 4 hours will let you know if the dose was successful....2 hour reading lets you know how much of a spike there was and how well timed the dose was....

being only 6 months in your control tends to be a tad unpredictable due to your pancreas having a go from time to time..

going low in the evening could be down to either too much insulin with your evening meal, or as you stated, the basal....

having a carb free meal a few night and testing regularly into the evening should confirm that and then dose adjustment could begin......consult with your team though seeing as your just new to it...
