Re: A good beginners guide to diabetes

Hello CJC

We are new to diabetes so we have been researching it. I found a book called Diabetes Revolution by Dr Charles Clark, published by vermilion. It helped me understand more about diabetes and some of the dietary implications for diabetics. Might be worth giving it a go.

Hi Cjc best book to start with is the Collins Gem carb or calorie counter, either is good and not expensive. The trouble with diabetes is that we are all different and finding your 'best 'diet is a bit of trial and error. The complex carbs such as rice, pasta ,potatoes and all flour based products convert 100% into glucose in the blood stream and therefore put your blood sugars up significantly. These ,therefore should be used in very small portions or even not at all.If you test before a meal and then two hours after and the readings are much the same then you have got that meal right.some people are lucky and can eat pasta, rice etc without too much of a 'spike',others like me just have to forgo these things!

This is also a good place to read about diabetes.

I'm also going to recommend Charles Clark's book. He's a top bloke and really knows his stuff.

I like Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. It's not an easy read and the units are all in mg/dl, which you can convert( x or / by 18) However it is comprehensive. pretty much anything you want to know, and much you'd rather you didn't, is in that book. It's expensive too. It does have an optimistic viewpoint though..

Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year -
by Gretchen Becker
I bought this when I thought I had type 2: an excellent book with a coverage of all sorts of subjects from blood tests, diets, (giving pros and cons of various approaches), testing, complications etc. Written by an American with Diabetes but available in a UK edition.

I can also recommend Becker's book. Also I have two books by Dr. Charles Fox on my bookshelf,
Type 2 Diabetes in adults of all ages, and Type 2 Diabetes - Answers at your Fingertips.

Regards, Tubs.

Also recommend Gretchen Becker as a starter book, and Bernstein for background.

The majority of up to date information is to be found on the internet though, have a look through the sources listed in the various stickies

Gretchen Becker has a blog also

not loading properly at the moment but usually accessible OK
