Some good news to start the week!
8)
In experiments on mice and rats, the scientists have managed to both prevent the development of type II diabetes and reverse the progression of established disease. The study is published in the journal Nature, where it is described as a breakthrough in diabetes research. The findings are the result of a joint effort by Karolinska Institutet, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the Australian biopharmaceutical company CSL Limited, amongst others.

ARE YOU A MAN OR A MOUSE?

Looks like I'd be better off as a mouse!

dunno about that... I wish they would pay more attention to us humans... surely we deserve better treatment than mice... or at least should get priority?! 8)

Those pesky mice are at it again... at the head of the queue... and how does a mouse become obese? By being spoilt of course...! 8)

"Irisin is a recently identified hormone secreted from muscle cells that has been found to serve as a chemical messenger providing key exercise-induced health benefits in mice. In these earlier studies, irisin showed direct effects on 'browning' of white fat which would lead to burning of excess calories. Discovery of irisin therefore raised expectations of potential for developing new therapies for metabolic diseases."

And they have even created an exercise regimen for them! I dunno..... 8)

In interesting piece that Catherine.... but it says it all re the cost and ethics of animal testing of mice vs piggy-wiggies... let alone how much to feed them up so they can be classed as obese... when there are people starving in the world... but testing on them is an even bigger can of wotsits... no ideal way I spose. 8)
