Since diagnosis I have listened to the advice of my DN and read lots of advice and information from the fabulous diabetic community on this forum. I tried metformin including SR (gross side effects for me so a no go). The DN was about to put me on insulin injections but I decided to try and find a way through this that works for me. I had read much about the success people were having with low carb diets and decided to try that before seeing the DN for my 'injection training'....

Success! I have lost weight and my blood sugar is currently controlled. My first 3 monthly HbA1c showed I had come down from 80 on diagnosis to 42 - my new (and excellent) DN is delighted and has agreed for me to continue without any meds and test again in 3 months. One of the best pieces of advice I read was to buy a meter (my original DN said not to but I ignored her on that!) as without one how could I know what was happening? I tested regularly at first but now just a couple of times a week unless I try a new food when I test before and after... this morning I tried porridge as NHS advice is that it is great for diabetics... well, for some maybe but for me it spiked my blood sugar from it's usual 6.8 (2 hours after food) to 10.6 !!! Just shows how important the motto 'eat to your meter' really is.

This site is brilliant and I have received lots of help and support here, it has been the most important factor in helping me to regain control of my blood sugar. I guess the hardest lesson to learn is that diabetes is for life, it a constant battle and I know I have to be watchful all the time to keep things under control. Thanks to all of you that post your experiences and thoughts (good and bad!) on here, between us we've got this thing licked

That's a huge reduction in HbA1c in just 3 months. Well done @Phuppetty_ ! :)
I'm sure you will be down to non-diabetic figures (below 42) at your next HbA1c test.
I thought porridge was ok too until I tested and got a similar result to you.

Well done, great job!

It brings to mind what my dn said to me at dx, "You will be sick of the sight of me, soon." Well, I beg to differ and will remind her of this the first time she says "Come and see me in twelve months".
