Oooh thanks, I missed strawberries. Are cherries berries?

Oh good...I might get eat some of the cherries out of the garden this summer then! I now have a good excuse not to let MH eat them all :D

red, white and black currants
Here are some you might find on walks
Bilberries (whinberries) or as they would call them here myrtilles.
Grow wild in many parts of the UK; they take ages to pick though.
elderberries (mixed with other berries; very sour )
alpine strawberries (tiny wild strawberries)

(actually tomatoes, bananas , grapes and avocados are botanically berries and strawberries aren't but somehow I dont't think thats what you mean  )

Simmer elderberries with a little lemon rind, cinnamon stick, and a pinch of salt, leave to cool, now add sweetener, as much as you need, then freeze in portions, when you are ready to use the elderberries, remove from freezer, heat up slightly and add a good glug of double cream to thicken or custard (make your own low carb real custard), the elderberries are lovely with ice cream, or served with any of the cakes, eg the Stracciatella cake, coconut cake, lemon cake, chocolate muffins, etc
Elderberries are free, they grow just everywhere, and strengthen the immune system > google Sambucol for information.
Make sure you only use the berries, dont use the leaves or stalks.
Of course you can also make elderberry ice cream, bit unusual, served with lemon ice cream and whipped cream, was very refreshing last summer. Or stir the berries into a sugar free jelly.

Good health to all

Rhubarb

not a berry but very low carbs and easy to grow if you plan ahead, but blinking expensive in the shops.
Also good for adding some flavour to strawberries which tend to be a bit watery at this time of year.

Our garden is surrounded by an almost wild hedgerow, far too long to keep under control, hence loads of elders.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Now just to remember to cook and freeze them later in the year.

Yes rhubarb is brilliant. I've found I can eat loads of that. If you mix it with a combo of plain and vanilla yoghurt it is remarkably similar to good old fashioned rhubarb and custard.

oh no - did you have to mention custard..? what wouldn't I give for a bowl of warm banana custard :(

Swimmer, you can make proper custard with eggs, cream and vanilla. Then slice a slightly unripe nana into it - the riper the nana the less of it you should eat.

What about the little baby bananas or bananitos? Ive also heard them called finger bananas too.

Guess it's like the cherries - try some and test. This is why everyone needs a meter, so you know exactly where you stand.

I took WJ's advice about elderberries last year and hey have been a great standby in the freezer all winter .

Are gooseberries OK anyone? Are they a true berry? Mixing rhubarb with yoghurt and'or cream will make an excellent rhubarb fool xyzzy.
