Hi
I checked my BG this evening, 6.2 before eating, 2 hours after eating (8.30pm) it was 7.3

I then checked 2 hours later, 10.30pm, having had nothing to eat since my meal, and it had risen to 8.2. Can someone explain to me why it increased during this time, please?

In case it is relevant, I ate 2 rounds wholemeal toast, some 'light' butter and a slice of fatless ham.

Is it possible that the carbs could have been delayed in absorption, hence a delayed rise? Or, does something else happen???

I'm Type 2, on Metformin 500mgs 3 times a day, and trying to reduce carbs to reduce BGs

Thanks

Hi,
Yes, you've probably hit the nail on the head here. The wholemeal bread has plenty of fibre and is therefore more gradually absorbed. Also, any fat content (as in the "fatless" ham and the light butter) will slow the absorbsion of carbs too. So I would expect that your blood test this morning might well be about normal.

mrburden is right. But did you eat NOTHING? I used to have a bit of fruit later in the evening and count that as "nothing" until I realised that, of course, fruit has carbs too and put my bg up before bed.

Hi
Thanks for your replies. Yes, I can assure you that I really didn't eat anything after the ham and toast. I was specifically out to see what the effect would be on BG, having eaten the ham and toast. So, your confirmation that absorption was most likely slow is helpful.

If this is the case, then I have 'room' for maybe small amount of fruit or yoghurt too, which would be good. So far, I am tending to eat just the 'first course' and not a dessert as my BGs peak a bit too high. I do enjoy fruits but the sugar content is rather alarming.

What a nightmare trying to work out what foods do what!!! I think, once I have sorted out some 'menus', I will have to spend a day or two doing very frequent BGs to see the overall pattern during the day.

Thanks for your help. If you have any further ideas or suggestions, please mention them. I'm grateful for all suggestions

You're right about the regular testing, it's the only way. I found that it wasn't just WHAT I ate, but also WHEN, and how I cooked it. Mornings I can eat tons of carbs, so big cereal brekky and bg's low. Evenings I'm hopeless. Also, a small amount of old potatos boiled and i get high BG's, but par-boiled for just a couple of minutes then sliced and done in the oven with olive oil and I'm fine - the fat slows it all down for me. Not just 2 hours after, it just doesn't go up so much at all.
A few glasses of red wine has the same effect fortunately! lowers the BG and cancels out the effect of the carbs! Yahoo!
