A question of fasting

Hi all.

I'm a newbie and so far lurk and read the forum posts ... very worthwhile ... I am in awe of the kind and helpful responses on this forum (I am used to video game forums, where those who reply are usually trolls, tiresome elites or potato heads) ...

I am also fascinated by the whole YouTube industry on the subject of Diabetes, ranging as usual from the fatuous to the criminal ... how some people and companies do love to make money from sick people !

The idea of fasting (on your low carb diet) seems prevalent, however many people propose it as a magic bullet, but do not give clear proofs and/or advice about how to actually do it properly and safely (though of course some will very kindly offer to let you have this data if you buy their dazzling (and expensive) products.)

I'm interested to know if anyone would be willing and able to advise me where to find professional and useful advice on this topic, not merely on YouTube (which is however very entertaining) but elsewhere where people know what they are talking about.

Appreciate any advice, as I'm quite attracted to the idea of keeping my insulin low by not snacking between meals and/or fasting, as an additional measure combined with LCHF, which is not working so well for me nowadays.

:arghh:

A great many people on this forum use fasting to help with control. I am sure some of them will be along to give you useful advice. We are all diabetics of one type or another, so who better to learn from?

@bulkbiker will, I'm sure, start things off for you, but we need to know which diabetes medications you are taking, if any, as this can make a big difference.

PS. Snacking between meals is never a good idea. :)

As @Bluetit1802 mentioned I intermittent fast every day and have done a few extended fasts in the past (usually with great results for lowering blood sugars).
My go to "expert" on fasting is Dr Jason Fung
Here's a link to his site with quite a few videos on Type 2 and fasting as therapy.

he's standing next to me in my avatar..

I would recommend following low carb for a number of weeks before attempting extended fasting as it's much easier when you can access body fat for nutrition which if you are coming from a carb burning metabolism is far harder until "fat adapted".
I just skip breakfast every day.

I don't take medication for diabetes ... they were happy to let me try diet and exercise initially ... I told them I have been using low carb diet for years (which had kind of fallen into disrepair, what with life and all) and they made no objection.

I agree no snacking between meals from now on, put the fat into the meal ... it was a hangover habit from the original Atkins diet, which recommended snacks when hungry ... guess the fact that snacks spike insulin didn't feature in those days o_O
I was shocked when I seriously reviewed my diet after the diagnosis, only to find my "snacking" had in fact become eating more meals per day ... so easy to become complacent and let things slide ...
