I do not have diabetes
Hello, I'm new around here and my mum is Type 1 Diabetic and i have 3 autoimmune disease as well, so I always have had a odd finger stick now and then on my mums machine and I've had a few higher than normal readings and wanted to pass them by you very informed people because my mum was concerned about some of the readings for a non diabetic person, so I invested in a glucometer for myself.

My morning fasting is never lower than 5.7 and I have been having post prandial readings (2 hour) of 8.1+ upto 8.8 and a few times higher if the meal has involved cake! My mum was concerned at the 8.1 after an afternoon of heavy excecise. Is this worth bothering the doc's about or for me to just keep an eye on them?

Thank you...

I would say that an 8.8 can be normal after a meal, especially if there was cake and just generally a good load of carbs........i wouldn't expect it to stay at the level for any decent length of time......

as for the afternoon of exercise, I too would think that it should be lower due to the effects of the exercise, but it depends on the exercise I supose..

what activity was it you were doing.......?

for peace of mind, a trip to the doctors wouldn't hurt........

keep testing though if you can......[don't use all your mums strips though.........;))

Thanks for answering...I was moving and lifting single beds and moving my nan out of her house and into a flat about 3 hours worth. I had very little to eat, half a sandwich (wholemeal) and literally 2 fingers width of cake. Usually when I've pinch my mums machine it's always been in the lower end of 5 even shortly after eating a huge meal and never much above 6. That's why I decided I should keep an eye on my readings. Also when I tested hubby with the same meal we had he went from 6 pre meal to 6.4 in 2 hours and I went 6.4 to 8.8 in 2 hours.... Don't worry I've bought my own meter and strips I think it's will be worth it x

its wise to monitor if you have concerns..........

as a type 1 diabetic who test between 5 - 10 times a day, I would never make any conclusions without a good set of results over a few days, that way you know there is an issue.....

so you should do the same, try out meals that you think will give you an increase and also ones that shouldn't.........write them down and then, if you still feel there is a problems, take them along to the doctors........

:)

Yes that's absolutely normal. I test my friends and family fairly often and numbers like that crop up all the time. If you've had cake and gone up to only 8.8, then you've got nothing to worry about.
