Hi folks, the 12th of June 2013 for me will always be remembered as a very surreal day, well morning.
I went for general blood test at docs on tues 11th june as I'd been very stiff in my joints for a few weeks and was drinking more than usual (yes I know now a classic symptom) I have an artificial hip and arthritis and can't exercise too much so I thought the stiffness was a result of that getting worse. I should probably add at this stage before going too much further into that surreal day that Im 43 5ft 9 and 15 stone, so not massively over weight for my size and had I thought, a reasonably balanced diet. not too much fatty foods and a fare few veg over the week, and didn't really eat many sweets either. My parents and my brother over the years have all been diagnosed at various times as type 2 diabetics and control with the exception of my dad who has 1 injection of insulin now a days at night via tabs and diet so you could say I was at some point expecting to hear I was type 2 even though I thought I had a better more healthier lifestyle.
Anyway the story continues.......................................
I got a call 8 am wed morning the 12th from docs saying they wanted to see me immediately a little over 3 hrs later I was leaving the hospital (having been referred by my doc that morning) as a type 1 diabetic and having to inject 4 times daily.
They have over the last 2 weeks got my glucose levels down from 28.5 to between 5 and 9 on average. and my ketones which were 1.5 are now fluctuating between 0 and 0.3.
I'm still waiting to see what my cholesterol and triglyceride levels are now which was 27 and 209 respectively
eyes are still iffy though at the mo, I'm told it'll take time.
If the diabetic team and my doctor hadn't acted as quick as they did I dread to think (now I know more about it) what the outcome could have been. It just shows how easily it can happen.
I'm now having to learn to live with doing blood tests and injecting 4 times a day along with re looking at diet and particularly carbs. To say the last 2 weeks has been rather stressful would be an understatement but I have a a good team and great family around me.
