A1c at home testing.

What a great idea, especially for those who don't have time to get to the hospital for fasting blood tests, but at £20 a test is it worthy of buying? when we get the test for free? I wonder if this will be on prescription one day?

Hi just had a look at this sounds great to keep on top of your diabetes but postage to UK is more than the actual product. Don't know if there are anymore out there as I am fairly new to tpe 2 diabetes.

It is a good idea in principal but the article seems to indicate it is just for one test and then throw it away which seems crazy at the price.

I think I'll wait for the one which can be re-used; however I just had a thought that it might open the door to more wretched strips to have to get a prescription for!

Well, it is £20 for two tests - but shipping is quite expensive; think I'll wait until next month and pick up a couple at Walgreens when I'm over there...

I wonder how the £10 per test compares with the cost of taking a sample at the GP and then sending it to a lab?

I got one of the 10-test ones ages ago, although I knew I would never buy it again (would need to mortgage the house!). You reuse the plastic bit in the pic (it stores in the fridge with the consumables) and on D-Day open two packets that house the blood collector and the thingy that slots into that plastic bit to take the blood and do the test respectively. There's another thread on this somewhere, where I put a link to the manufacturer's video of how to do it. My tests have usually produced readings of 0.1 or 0.2 variance from the one the doc did (lower in fact) but the last one I did was 0.6 different (also lower) and that worried me a bit. As I say, it was good to try but I am more confident now and less likely to distrust the doc. So when it runs out, that will be it. If I order anything else from abroad and pay lots of postage it will be a jigsaw from Canada that I covet, not a medical aid! The money should be spent on treats that we "are" allowed.

This may be a stupid question, but do the larger chain of chemist not offer this test too?

I would have thought it might have been a money spinner for them, I know you can get cholesterol test done, so can't see why they don't also offer this service to customers.

I noticed an ad a few days ago that Menarini Diagnostics do a kit for £17 inc P&P

http://www.glucomena1c.com/flash.shtm#order

I have not seen any leaflets in Boots etc, but then I was not really looking and @ £17 a go I think I'll leave my Hb1ac to my DN to arrange the 6 monthly free tests. I did test drive their LX meter and the readings were the same as my Countour but with about 1/2 the blood required, so this might be a good product for those wanting quick answers with cash to spare
