About milk consumption

I choose to go with unsweetened soy milk sometimes I add Splenda into it, if I want it sweet.

Honestly, I'd rather "spend" the carbs elsewhere. Also, for those that have cholesterol issues, full fat milk is a no go.

Not sure one can say that with such conviction these days....

Which part?
Cholesterol.. current thinking is that dietary cholesterol intake has little to do with levels of cholesterol in your blood. Although there are many who disagree.. the jury is definitely out on that one..

Ah I see. As someone who has high cholesterol, my doctor has advised low fat dairy. That's all I was saying. I though to avoid anything "low fat" I'd just switch to soy milk.

Probably a good idea.
Even recent non mainstream 'experts' agree dietary cholesterol makes about 20% of cholesterol in an average person.

The problem is, there is no such thing as an average person. Most 'experts' then go on to say, while it won't raise your cholesterol, if it does, high cholesterol isn't bad for you.
Mainstream thinking is much more of the conservative model still, and I tend to have good results sticking to it.
The only way to be sure, is to have regular blood tests, regular reviews with your GP, and decide for yourself your best way to control your cholesterol.

Thanks for all your responses! I do use fat free milk because I have high cholesterol & wish to avoid saturated fats. I also need the calcium & protein. Bunneria, could u please tell me which greens have the most calcium? Greens have many fewer carbs than milk, so if I can get my calcium from them I'd b really glad. I am a Newbie so am trying to learn all I can. Thanks for all the clarifications!

The highest level of calcium from any green is watercress. I eat it every day :)

Sox Brunneria, was just up early....as usual and roaming around:)

I don't do dairy - not for any health reason other than I dont like it. I have a small amount of cheese now and then and half fat creme fresh because that's not as creamy tasting. I get plenty of calcium from leafy greens, tinned fish with bones, a small amount of almonds - you can take calcium in tablet form if you feel the need

To be honest if you are happy with the numbers you are getting when you test and the milk doesn't raise your bs you don't need to change if you don't want to. I don't eat high fat just enough fat from oily fish, nuts, avocado and cold pressed oils such as olive oil

Thanks so much Kevin. I've never eaten watercress but will definitely get it. Do u mostly eat it plain in a salad? We Americans don't typically think "watercress"! I associate it with English tea time--watercress sandwiches. Ha, ha! Crazy Americans! ;)
I've discovered kale. Only 1 cup supplies 7.5% of daily calcium required.

Thanks lovinglife. I liked the completeness of ur post. FYI, I try to get all my calcium from food because of having one kidney which more easily gets stones from calcium in pill form. Thus the milk use & search for greens with the most calcium. Kale's a good one!
Perhaps I'm stuck in my ways, but I still think too much saturated fat is not the way to go so I use olive oil, avacado, nuts, & fish as u do. This has helped me reach my goal weight. My doctor does not have me test my bs so I'm not into that yet. My A1c was high for the first time in 2015 so she said to cut the carbs & lose weight. We will check again in early October as she said one test was not conclusive. I can go with that but started taking the quality of my diet very seriously. Thus I eat under 120 carbs most days & lost all my excess weight. I track carbs, protein, calories, & calcium from foods. Thanks again for the post.
