About ready to give up

I am doing a ketogenic diet and I have my protein at 60g/day my carbs at 20g/day the rest is fat. I have been trying to get keto adapted for about 3 months now. I first started with too much protein and put it down and these are the amounts I have come to. I only ever get 0.4-0.8 on the ketone blood meter. When I have gone above 1.0 it has only stayed there for a very short time. I want to get keto adapted because I have lack of energy and headaches in the limbo as I call it. I take potassium, magnesium and sodium. I don't know what I could be doing wrong anymore. I am about ready to give up. The only good thing is better control, but tbh they can keep it if I'm going to feel this **** all the time.

I also take metformin SR 1500mg /day.

Can someone please help me?

Could it be that you have too much insulin and therefore storing therefore your body doesn't think it needs to burn the fat - Not really sure @Spiker may be able to help as he has gone ketogenic as T1 recently

60g P and 20g C rest F (ideal protein is .8-1g of lean weight, that's BMI minus fat, eg total 70kg and 20% fat is 45g to 55g protein)
you have to be in ketosis and I haven't heard anyone going longer than a month to adapt

Hi there. Am assuming you mean LCHF? Would recommend the following website:
http://www.dietdoctor.com
The guy who writes this blog is a Swedish doc specialising in obesity and diabetes.
This is the diet I follow. I need to lose weight but not everyone who follows it is diabetic or needing to lose weight. I don't weigh anything. I don't eat starchy carbs ie rice, pots, pasta or bread. Nor do I have cake or biscuits unless it's a special occasion.
I start my day with bacon or sausage (97% meat) and egg.
I then have tapas style lunch ie mini sausages, salami, olives, bits of cheese, cherry tomatoes.
Dinner is meat or fish with salad or veggies.
Sometimes I have a small handful of berries or make my own ice cream with frozen berries and cream.
You must drink gallons of water.
2 squares of 70% choc every evening. A couple of glasses of white per week.
Hope this helps.

read atkins LC, he stopped telling people to use ketostrips because when in ketosis and stable, you don't throw high ketones
if you want to lose weight you take is less carb and don't replace it all with fat and so you burn body fat and can get it higher for a while

does that make sense?

I use a blood ketone meter.
I eat 1200 calories so very little fat to fill in the extra calories.

ok, I've only used strips and had it start out high and drop back with ketogenic diet.

going by this you should be reading blood ketones, even though after a while you wont read urine ketones,

google the hard core ketogenic sites. they may have better info

compare what you eat with the atkins induction diet, that's as hard core as you can get
but even still, with a total 1200 cal you would be losing weight and burning body fat and be throwing ketones

Might explain it. Eat normal amount and see what happens.
I was and I wasn't losing weight. So I reduced my fat.
The weight loss isn't a worry as I know why I can't lose weight, because I can't move around because I feel too sluggish whilst never reaching ketosis.

that last link I put in as an edit and I don't know if you saw it but it does answer it a bit, ketogenic start at 0.5 and you are running those levels
http://www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com/ketones.html
During fasting or low carbohydrate intake, levels of ketone bodies in the blood stream can rise to levels between 0.5mM and 5 mM, depending on the amount of protein and carbohydrates consumed. This state is called nutritional ketosis.

You still eat far too little. Eat until you are full two or three times per day and fill up on fat and see if you find higher level of ketones. By reducing your energy intake to below starving mode your body will fight hard to hold on to what fat stores it holds.

And check your thyroid.

the normal reason for feeling cold and feel sluggish etc, is because they aren't eating enough fat, at 1200cal your body goes into starvation mode after a while
try upping your fat with fat bombs (if you google "fat bombs" you will find the keto guys)

edit..what @Totto said

my thyroid FT4 was 9.0 in may I asked my doctor about this and he said it was in range because the labs here say between 7.0 - 25.0 pmol/l. My TSH is 1.2 though. I have had another one and I'm waiting on the results.

I know if I eat anymore I will just stall. I also have PCOS which causes weight gain etc

so lets go to stable weight for a while?
eat more fat and stop burning body fat, there is no need to up the protein and 20g of carb is hard core, put more veg and some beans and lentils in to 50g a day
try that for a while and see how you feel, feeling good is more important than losing weight

I have had similar thyroid results and was very ill indeed. I don't know why my pituitary didn't want to play, possibly because of a severe concussion at the age of three? I self medicate with NDT, natural dessicated thyroid.

I was considering just trying to keep below 100g of carbs. And keeping my calories low enough to lose weight. I just feel this diet makes me ill and I haven't lost anything on it as yet.
