Hi. I'm about to start the Keto way of life. I am T1 and have been in denial for almost 12 mths and am now ready to take life seriously. I have done lots of research online but cannot get an appointment with the GP's diabetic team for 3 mths for advice. So, what did you all do regarding basal/bolus intake In the beginning? I'm thinking of halving my Lantus the night before I begin and carb counting with bolus if I need it. Any advice you can give me would be great. Also what do you all take for hypos if you have them. Thanks all

Hi I'm a Type 2 who follows a keto diet.
I would suggest joining www.ketogenicforums.com if you haven't already.
They have a Type 1 section in the health forums category which is not permitted to view publicly (you need to have joined the forum to view it). I have found the people there extremely knowledgable about all aspects of the keto way of eating from recipes to the most up to date science. I'm afraid I can't help with your other questions as I don't take any medication.

I'm not T1, so can't really advise you on insulin at all, but going from "normal eating" to Keto is quite a shift if you have only been diagnosed a brief time (brief in the bigger picture). Are you still honeymooning?

Could it be a potential to go keto in stages, by incrementally reducing your card intake and insulin dosages in tandem, rather than contemplating bigger changes which in my simple thoughts could lead to bigger errors?

In my experience, any experimentation will have things that go stunningly well and things that go less well.

Personally, I might consider playing the longer game and decrease things steadily.

Good luck with it all.

I’m T1 and keto. Less than 20 c per day. Mostly in avocado, nuts and a few veggies.
I could never get my insulin right eating carbs so I went back to keto. I had to cut my insulin doses a LOT. I do however have to bolus for half my protein as if it were a carb. I also prebolus 20 min as that’s about the time it takes my insulin to start working.

Error on the side of caution and take less insulin. It’s better to be a tad higher than hypo. Then you’ll soon figure out your bolus.

For a slight hypo, which is really all I get as I only take 1/2 units with small meals, depending where I am and when I last took insulin a few veggies does the trick. I don’t like a large jump up so I try to rise slowly but like I said, I rarely have serious hypos. I’m super carb sensative so even some avocado and veggies will raise me IF my last insulin dose is over 2 hours.

I would recommend doing this gradually rather going cold turkey. I reduced my carbs, not too dramatically and I felt rough for a couple of weeks. I was also hypo a lot... talking 4 times in one night.
