Acceptable Blood Glucose Level

Mid teens is not acceptable, again type 2's being treated with lack of concern. I am type 2 and at the moment have set my upper goal as 9.5 wwhich is still above the recomended NICE guidelines of 8.5, as my levels were in the 20's and the docs were happy with that :(

A different doctor has since changed my meds and BS levels are at last coming back into my accepable ranges. Having levels in the teens and above can lead to diabetic complications, got the T shirt as they say thankfully mine are only minor effects.

It's my belief that diabetics should have NORMAL blood glucose. that meand about 4-5 not near mealtimes and back to there 2 hours after eating.
In my years of campaigning work, I've let non-diabetics play with blood glucose meters [kindly donated by a supplier] The highest reading I've seen was 8.? That was shortly after eating a pasta bake and in a person who had some risk factors. I didn't eat that pasta meal, having just a salad and my bg on that occasion was 5.4
Since a reading of 7 is sufficient to allow a diagnosis of diabetes! I can't think that keeping anywhere near rthere is safe.

PS healthcare professionals often don't even know what normal blood glucose is. I've asked and usually get the Diabetes UK figures quoted at me.Tthe only place I've seen it written, is on the leaflet of a pack of test strips. These vary a bit, but are in the range of about 4.5 - 5 in all the brands I've looked at.

Oh God what an advice you got from dietician!
Get it as low as possible especially if you are type 2 with no big risk of hypos

I think you just found out that many Healthcare professionals just don't know enough about diabetes.
Dr Richard Bernstein, whose approach I follow says that diabetics deserve NORMAL blood sugars. 8.5 is higher than any level I've seen in a non diabetic. I've allowed people to "play" with meters many times. I've been diabetes campaigning for YEARS
Bernstein quotes 85mg/dl as normal . That translates to 4.7mmol/l There are authorities who allow much higher numbers, but I wonder why the rate of complications is so high here in Britain.
An Hb A1c of 6.5% [NICE target!] equates to an AVERAGE bg of about 8.5 however non diabetics tend to have HbA1cs around 4.5%[ average 4.6] or even a bit lower. Bernstein was suggesting normal would be 4.2%[ average 4.0] Forget "Four's the floor!"
I'm not saying those are easy to attain, but they are my targets.
I usually come in at about 5.5% and I haven't seen an 8.5 on my meter in at least 9 years.. In fact the highest I can remember in the last year or so was 7.2, whilst I had a respiratoy infection.
I know a lot of people question the numbers I quote, but I want to live complication free to see my grandchildren at least into University.

I believe that life isn't meant to be easy even without extra metabolic difficulties.
