Re: accu chek compact

Are you able to get any other test strips on prescription? if so try getting in touch with the meter makers and try and get a free meter sent out. It does seem to be a bit of a post code lottery where prescribing test strips are concerned. You could always try ebay as a source for strips too.

Have just come back from the chemist with my monthly prescription for Accu-check compact test strips. Been using this machine for about 10 years and find it invaluable to have everything (machine, finger pricker and test strips) in one handy device. This is made better by the bright display which can be read in dark and dim light - perfect for me due to severe retinopathy in both eyes.
That said, the prescription had a cunning little note attached, written by the doctor (though not told to me at time of ordering) that the machine and test strips are now no longer available on the NHS.
Has anyone else experienced this or aware of the issue?
I have 4 such machines - one at home, one at work, one in the car and a spare. I am useless at remember to take it with me, so no problem with 4. I do not wish to switch machine and do not believe either machine or strips are more expensive than others.
I would welcome others experience on this to see if it is an arguement I am likely to win with the doctor or not.

Re: accu chek compact

I live in Chester and have had these free on NHS for 10 years. They have just informed me though that it is no longer available so am stuck. Not sure this helps you much.

This is an extract from the latest BNF58. It shows the strips as still being available.

Compact® (Roche Diagnostics)
Reagent strips , for blood glucose monitoring, range 0.6–33.3 mmol/litre, for use with Accu-Chek® Compact and Accu-Chek® Compact Plus Net price 3 × 17-strip pack = £14.88

The meters are no longer available. Phone the Accu-Chek helpline if you still have a problem. Their number is:
UK: 0800 701 000
Ireland: 1 800 709 600

Opening hours: Monday - Friday: 8am - 8pm Saturday: 10am - 4pm Sunday: 10am - 1pm

They will very likely give you a new meter as it is out of production.

I would assume that you'll talking about the ordiginal Accu-check compact meter which is blue in colour? Rouche has discontinuled this one..

But the Compactplus is still available which is black in colour and a newer version of the old meter..

It uses the same strip drum as the older compact and are still available on prescription, hubby picked his up this week..

If you are having problems you can up-grade your meter either by phoning Accu-Check or going to there website they wil do this up-grade for free no problems..

Hmmmmm...goes of to GP to see if I can order more strips!
I have both an old and a new compac, and prefer the old one as at least it had a decent case with it.
I f I do have problems, will be phonig th Accuchec people who have always been really helpful in sending me new meters (and selling test strips to the NHS of course)
