Aches and pains

Was diagnosed with Type2 diabetes on Christmas Eve. Put on Metformin and syvastatins. I've lost 4 lbs this week and went to the diabetic clinic yesterday.
Problems I'm having are: headaches, lower tummy ache and lower back pain. Haven't had a bowel movement for a couple of days? Is this the cause? I'm feeling quite unwell. Told the diabetic nurse and she told me to take laxatives. Took 1 last night but so far, nothing's happened.

Being on metformin can give you a funny stomach. I know the nurse said take a laxative please don't use Lactrolose as this contains a lot of sugar. I have to take 2 senna at night, i mean every night. Being constipated can make you feel like you do. Did she test your urine by any chance as you could have a urine infection.

Thanks for replying, Tracey. I haven't been on the Metformin for a few days as it made me feel shaky at the beginning. Came off it and just back on it today.
Nurse did take a specimen of urine but she said it had to go to the hospital to be tested? Not sure why they just didn't do it there and then.,
My diet has had to change drastically but I've still been able to have a bowel movement regularly till a couple of days ago.
 
I went back on the Metformin on the advice of the diabetic nurse. I have been bent double with stomach cramps the last few days to the point I am frightened to eat anything at all because the pain is unbearable, and I had diarrheoa. { I have only just had a wholemeal roll with lean ham] and that's the first I've eaten since early evening yesterday when I had two cuppa soups.
I haven't taken the Metformin at all today and haven't had any craps. I feel better but don't really feel like eating at all. I don't know what to do with myself.
I was brought up in the care system and never knew my parents. I have been doing the family history and found out a few days ago that my mother died of pancreatic cancer. I'm terrified I have it too.
 
Don't panic.
Some folks can't tolerate the regular Metformin and have the slow release version instead, this doesn't upset stomachs so much.
Try taking the tablets at a slightly different time, either before meals, during or after. I take mine a bit before my meal as if I took it during or after the meal it made me feel a bit sickly.
Regarding the bowel problems and headaches. Are you drinking plenty of fluids as Metformin tends to dehydrate sometimes. When I first started taking it I got headaches if I didn't drink plenty of water, coffee etc during the day.
I also had constipation problems initially, I think it has something to do with the change in diet and reduction in carbs. My system settled down after a while and I regularly add flaxseed to homemade muesli or the fruit and Soya Yoghurt I have for breakfast which I think helps.

I was warned about the side effects of Metformin when I was put on the drug and did suffer them for a while. The max I can take is 500ml twice a day, any increase gives me severe side effects. I am OK now and take them along with insulin with no problems at all.

I think you do have to be patient with it and allow your body to get used to the medication. In time it should settle, if it doesn't then talk to your diabetic team. There's a lot that I can't take and my GP and diabetic team have been very understanding about this.
