I've got a pal coming next month for the weekend, and I'd quite like to have a few drinks over the course of the weekend.

I know red wine is good, but what about spirits? Any lagers that are low carb/sugar?

Give me your best tips to get ****** without the blood sugar guilt :D

Holsten Pills lager........all the sugar turns to alcohol. Yippee. good times ... dont go too mad though!!!!!!!!!!!!...I remember a few times my sister and I had to cook our own dinners when younger because this was all my diabetic mum could drink at dinner times at the club and she got too drunk to cook( not that she did it a lot, it was just it was too strong for her ha ha) .....Bad times.

Hi Gov,
Pils is the lowest carb beer because all the sugar is fermented out to alcohol. But that also makes it the most potent in strength. Red and dry white wines are also low in carbs. Also gin, vodka and whisky are low carb - but its whatever you add to them that you need to be careful of. Just make sure your mixers are all "diet" ones.

Remember that alcohol can have a big effect on your BG levels. I copied the following from the Avon NHS diabetes advice website:

"Alcohol actually has the effect of lowering blood glucose levels.

Alcohol is more likely to cause a hypo if you drink on an empty stomach. If you are on insulin, sulphonylureas or glinides then it is safest to only drink alcohol at mealtimes. If you are tempted to drink on an empty stomach then be sure to eat a snack at the same time.

Hypoglycaemia that results from drinking alcohol can be sudden and severe. To complicate matters, if you are under the influence then you may not realise that your blood glucose level is dropping. Your friends may not realise either; they may mistake your unsteadiness or confusion for drunkenness.

Hypoglycaemia will often occur during the night after an evening drinking session. And unfortunately the effects of the alcohol may mean that you don’t wake up."

So, don't go overboard and make sure you have some carbs with your drinks.

Somebody once told me that Jack Daniel's contains no carbs whatsoever.
Although they were very, very drunk at the time.

My new doctor is much more professional. :D
