Hi just joined the forum and i thought i would give some insight as to what has happened to me. In 2020 out of the blue i suffered three attacks of pancreatitis and was hospitalised in all three attacks. The last one was so severe that my wife was told that i properly would would not be coming home, after 21 days in hospital and fantastic NHS care i got to go home. I was told that my MRI scan had picked up that i had 7 gallstones in my Gaul bladder and back into hospital i went and out they came along with my Gaul bladder. I had absolutely no symptoms of gallbladder trouble what so ever no pain nothing. I got home three days later and within a week i had lost Three stone in weight and felt awful. It is now two years down the line and i now have Type 2 Diabetes and i can not put a single gram of weight on. I now weigh 60 kg and i look like i am at deaths door. I take Metformin max dose, six Creon tablets and i am now on Forxiga Dapagliflozin as well. Prior to having the Pancreatitis attacks i was 12 stone a none drinker a none smoker and very very fit, i did all the right things and thought i would go into retirement with out any trouble how wrong can you get. If any readers have got any ideas about weight gain i would be very grateful to hear them iam coming up to 70 now and i guess this is it as i cant get any true full answers out of any body just about fed up with every thing now. Sorry if i have gone on a bit to much Thanks.

Do you know what your blood glucose is throughout the day? Or what your last hba1c was?

Seeing as you need to take creon, I suppose your pancreas is damaged from the pancreatitis. If the insulin producing cells of your pancreas are damaged as well, it may be you simply don't produce enough insulin, which makes it very hard to gain weight.

Diabetes as a result of damage to the pancreas is called type 3C, and treatment varies depending on the extent of the damage.

Are you under GP care or are you seeing an endocrinologist?
If GP, I'd push for a referral to have your C-peptide tested, this test tells you something about how much insulin you produce.

Hi thanks for your reply. I have not seen my GP or anybody else since i came out of hospital 2 years ago but i have had 3 phone consultations with the consultant that looked after me in hospital and he is fully aware of my weight condition but no answers .He referred me to a dietician to get some answers i waited 5 months for an appointment which came last week and when i rang i was told i could not see any body face to face even though my consultant said that i had to a face to face appointment. The last 2phone consultations i had with the dietician 18 months ago were to say the least unbelievable she told me to eat Mars bars and crisps to gain weight My last hba1c was 64 and i have another blood test in 18 days time. The diabetic nurse that is looking after me said that i should go on insulin as my last hba1c was very high. I had one injection and my blood sugars dropped to 4 and i felt very ill so she took me of insulin straight away and i just take my prescribed pills. i take my bloods twice a day and they average is between 6 and 9 mmol. Thank you for telling me about diabetes Type 3c its the first i have heard of it as no one has mentioned it to me at all. Thankyou for concern.

If you're not producing enough of your own insulin you'll need injected insulin, not T2 medication. Finding the right dose isn't easy though. It may be you're very sensitive to insulin and only need a very small dose.
i have another blood test in 18 days time.
Can you contact your consultant to explain your issue and see if they can add a C-peptide test to your next blood test? That will show how much insulin you are producing yourself.

With your hba1c of 64 it might be you're missing some high readings, as this hba1c is associated with an average blood glucose of around 10.

Hi can I ask if you are taking ppis with your creon as they make you creon more effective. the difficulty is that pancreatitis patients are often unable to digest high fat meals. weight lose can be is a sign that you need to increase your dose. I understand that you are already trying to catch up with your weight but a good dietrian via a gastroenterologist should prescribe supplement like ensure (you can buy these)then a good vitamin and mineral supplement. I take two supplement drinks on prescription which you must take with creon to work.

look up amyes vitamin and mineral supplements

it won’t let me post a link

hope this helps

Hi, I suffered from necrotising acute pancreatitis 4 years ago, and after a long period in hospital was released with Creon. I still have acute pancreatitis, but couldn't cope with Creon, so was changed to Nutrizim 22. As it is a lower amount of pancreatin I need to take more tablets, but at least can keep food down. I also take vitamin D and calcium, plus Lanzoprazole to keep my stomach less acidic so the pancreatin works. I find that if I don't take sufficient pancreatin my bowels go very loose, and I soon start losing weight. Ensure is great for a while until you are able to get onto a normal diet once more.
Also the pancreatin only works in a small area of the bowel, so I tend to take one tablet after every mouthful of food (up to 16 tablets per meal...).

Hope this info helps:)

I have Chronic Pancreatitis (from 2010)
I have Creon x 12 +4 per day, plus the usual Lansoprazole plus all my other drugs for other things.
I find that too much Creon makes me constipated, not enough I'm loose, despite a high protein medium fat diet, I usually loose 1kg per 3 months but if I take a little more carbs then I don't obviously this affects my HbA1C and my diabetes nurse will tell me off
But it is a very fine balance of more than one item in my diet which is far too easy to get wrong
