Adjusting Basal Doses?

Hi everyone,

I have been having pretty consistent spikes while I'm sleeping and was if this could be to do with my Basal dose. I currently take 11 units at 10pm and was diagnosed T1 in Feb. I also need to work on Carb counting and do recognise that this could be contributing to the issue. I'm on the waiting list for DAFNE but I do recall seeing people share a free course online when I first joined the forum. Is that still running?

Before adjusting your basal, I'd do a basal test and discuss the results with your DSN before making any adjustments as you're recently diagnosed.

When are the nighttime spikes happening? What basal insulin do you take?

Ooo thank you for that! I take Lantus and the spikes seem to be between 12 and 2 in the morning then stay consistently high until about 8 when I wake up, test and correct.

All this info I am getting from the Libre but feel the Basal test with the finger pricking would give clearer answers. Don't know why I didn't think of it myself! Thank you again!

Do you take your Lantus dose once per day? It's well known that almost all basal insulins don't last 24 hours; with the exception of Tresiba I believe. Seeing as your BG raises around midnight, this could well coincide with the prior 10pm basal dose running out whilst the latest one waits to kick in.

As rightly suggested by @azure, you should check in with your DSN and they may put forward the idea of splitting your Lantus dose in half to provide better coverage.
