Hello everyone. My husband has been type 1 for about 30 years and on an insulin pump for about 4 years. We have recently bought a BG monitor too to work along side the pump. Problem is, despite years of trying to fathom patterns with food eaten, exercise done etc. we just cannot get him to have consistent BG throughout the day. For example, he will be up at 24 then down at 2 or 3 and no matter how much glucose he takes he may stay at 2 or 3 for hours and hours and then ping back up really high again. To be honest we are at the end of our tether. Discussing the days BG activity is our main source of conversation and despair despite hours and hours of trying to spot patterns and making adjustments. Is this the same for others, is it 'normal' for other type 1s out there? We don't really know where to go next with it so really hoping someone can offer some similar experiences and perhaps advice?

Sounds as if your hubby needs to go right back to basics and sort his basal out.
http://diatribe.us/issues/13/learning-curve What insulin is he using and what durration of insulin has he got set on his pump?
Also if you don't have it invest in the book pumping insulin by John Walsh. It's known as the pumpers Bible

Thank you both, we have ordered the book straight away and are following the other links you both suggested to learn more. Really do appreciate your time in responding.

Hi, I agree with CarbsRok, sounds like your basal may need a good looking it.

When I need to check mine I pick a morning where I'm not doing anything particularly strenuous and test my sugars, I then do not eat for two hours and check my sugar again, if it's high/low you know your basal needs to be adjusted.

Obviously if you do this take care as our bodies are all different and make sure you do eat after you've checked your two hour sugars. How are his bolus's are you carb counting? Hope this helps.

Hi does ur husband count carbs and have ratios fir each meal? Ive been diabetic for 23 years and only been.on a pump since august. I found that things have changed so much since diagnosis that when i attended the DAFNE course in february i learnt so much even though i went into it thinking " what on earth are they gonna teach me that i havent learnt in 23 years" boy i was so wring. Before this i woyld do exactly what your husbands doing swing from very high to very low in the matter if half hour sometimes.
Thunk it really is a case of going back to basics and as others say, sirtung the basal is a good place to start.
Good luck
