Hi,

I posted last week about advice with taking metformin SR as I keep getting a very bad upset stomach.
I went to see my GP last week who basically said it happens when you take Metformin and advised me to just carry on and if I could not eat anything because of nausea then don't take the Metformin that evening.

This week I am back to having an upset stomach again. I don't feel I should stop taking Metformin, but I am so fed up with feeling so unwell.

My HBa1C was 51 and 6 months earlier it was 51.

Can anyone offer any advice as to what I should do. I only eat plain foods and toast at the moment.

Thanks

Some people react badly to Metformin, worse than others. Are you monitored by a nurse? Maybe you could have a word with her about coming off Metformin. Just a suggestion.

I feel a bit worried coming off Metformin, but I wouldn't do anything without medical advice. Before I was diagnosed I didn't have any symptoms at all. My levels were borderline on a routine blood test. But because I have a heart condition my GP said to go on Metformin.

I couldnt get on with metformin, not even the slow release version. Doctor changed my prescription from generic metformin (which is the cheaper version) to Glucophage (branded). She said she had patients who could take this but not take metformin so I tried it for myself. So much better - no constant running to the loo or general bad stomach issues. I just stopped taking the metformin and told her there was no way I could work whilst taking that medication. Doc said I shouldn't have to put up with those sort of symptoms and am so much happier on Glucophage. The only time I seem to have an issue with this is if I have too much **** food e.g. crips, chocolate or just too many carbs. Ask your doctor for them and tell them you are not prepared to carry on the way you are. Might cost the surgery a little extra money but to my way of thinking, I have paid my taxes and national insurances for years which is more than some people can say so dont see why I have to put up with medication that doesnt agree with me.
