I have employed a manual operator who has since disclosed he has type 1 diabetes. He works standing up at a machine on a concrete floor wearing steel cap boots. Should I have any special arrangements in place.with regards to H&S? He has problems with his feet and I have read that working on a concrete floor wearing steel toe cap boots is not ideal. I am not looking to lose this operator but need to know if his working conditions are going to be detrimental to his condition. Also I understand him not wanting to declare his illness at the interview stage but should he had informed me once employment started?

The conditions you describe shouldn't be a problem for a type one diabetic...

His feet issues, which may or may not be connected to the diabetes, might cause issues, but it depends on what they are....is it a long term issue....? we can assume the employee knew the job when applying for it..

it would have been in their interest to inform the employer of the diabetes although not necessary for every position....but diabetes is covered in the discrimination act, so its the wisest decision....

As a T1 your employee may from time to time experience Hypos. They may require a bit of time away from the 'coal face' to deal with that issue, which you should afford them
