Advice needed for Poor Control due to 2nd rebellion.

Help, Urgent advice need please.

I have had Diabetes for over 30 years and started off with a lot of resentmant when first been diagnosed. I felt "Why me? its not fair"
I grew to accept it and coped well for many years after a comment from a fellow diabetic
"You control the diabetes, Dont let it control you!"

Now I feel I am in a second childhood as my diabetes is poorly controlled, I miss injections, miss meals out during the day and seldom take the time to check my blood sugars. Just like I did when first diagnosed.

My Doctor has asked is it a form of self harm I am experiencing?

I just feel fed up with having to deal with my diabetes at the moment.

I have been told that Diabetss been a cronic desease can make people feel this way.
Have any other members felt the same way or am I been a complete berk by neglecting my control? :|

Hope for some advice.

Yours

Hi bonkersb.

I think you know the answer to your question ?

Do you want to get all the complications documented here and elsewhere ? Do you want your GP to label you as a lost cause ? I don't think you do otherwise why would you be here ?

We can help you get back on track with plenty of good advice and loads of support. However, you have to make the decision to change your lifestyle and get your life and your Diabetes under control.
If you are willing to do that it will change your life. You will have a life. I am sure you have loved ones who will help and support you as well. It can and does get better.

There are probably many things we can help with, just have a good look around the forum and read the success stories. When you are ready ask any questions you want.

Ken.

BTW. Another confirmed TPratchett fan here. :D
Looking forward to 'Going Postal' in 2010 on Sky.

Hiya Bonkersbatty

You are in the same position I was a few months ago. Hated being diabetic, couldn't control BG (and most days wanted to give up trying).

Now I'm not the worst diabetic in the world so I do consider myself to be rather fortunate, but when you feel down being diabetic does make life hard.

However, I was invited to join a dose adjustment course (similar to DAFNE) a few months ago and it has given me a new persepctive. I now understand things better, I control my BG well, I eat less carbs, if I miss a meal it doesn't matter because I take insulin as it is needed not when I am told to. It was the best three days I have spent in ten years.

Think about doing something different which gives you a kick start - a new regime often helps put things back on track.

Keep smiling!! :D

I wonder how many type 1s your doctor has on his books. It might help to get a referral to a hospital specialist or at least to ask to speak to a diabetes specialist nurse.
I think that what you're experiencing is very common. So common indeed that it has a 'name' and there is even a book about it (Diabetes Burnout... its American and I haven't read it though it gets good reviews on US Amazon.) If you google Diabetes Burnout you'll also find lots of mentions.

It's common for a lot of reasons including these
The time and attention required to manage type 1 .You can't put it on the backburner and forget it for a day.If you do, you then feel guilt, so you ignore it for a bit and then feel even more guilty. It's sometimes difficult to break the cycle.

Sometimes focusing on 'perfect control' can cause it, especially if you are doing 'everything right and it just doesn't work. Type 1 isn't always easy. Even if you can achieve it the micromanaging necessary can get too much. (sometimeds reading forums like this can make this one worse :( )

Sometimes, pressure from your family and others (the doctor?) and sometimes comments from the 'diabetes police' can just get too much.

You've done one thing that can help, contacting a support group of people that face the same problems but I think that Its also good to meet other type 1s, are there any support groups in your area?
(you could contact Diabetes UK, the charity, not this site)

A Dafne type course is an excellent suggestion. It might help you control of your diabetes and hence your life. Following its ideas help you to live a very flexible lifestyle. There is a sort of online version which might be of, help partiuclarly if you haven't come across the ideas of dose adjustment before.http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/ (but I think being with others is important)
Good luck,
I'm sure just 'talking' about it may help.

Hi all

Thanks for your words of encoragement and advice.

I must admit I attended a DAFNE course a year last November and I found it quite a revalation and I was well controlled for several weeks but have just let it slip. Both the blood monertering and

My hbc1a has not been in single figures for over a year now, the last reading was off the scale, didnt go down well with the consultant.

Glad to know Iam not the only one with Diabetic Burn Out.
