have had a cold coming on for last couple of days levels have been harder to control so have taken more insulin to combat this.

had dinner tonight so took 8 novorapid rather than my usual 6. tested 2 hours later and my levels were 12.6 so took 2 more units of insulin ... just guessing really just tested again and instead of going down they are now 14.2.

Bit confused as to what to do haven't had an ill day or sick plan yet so Im in the dark. Have tested for keytones and got traces but nothing more.

Advice would be great ...
Thanks x

Remember to keep yourself hydrated too. very important. Can be tricky when bringing high numbers down with a correctional dose. sometimes I have found it can take upto 5 hours for the bolus to work and then the BG plummets fast.If I take correctional bolus I test after 2 hours to check for any movement and then again after 3. If no change take another shot. 1 unit of insulin usually drop the BG by about 3mmol/L.

Hope you're better soon!

well after waking up with reading of 8 I wasn't hungry didnt eat breakfast and was 6 before lunch. Had 6 units (amount I would normally have for dinner - usually have 4 for lunch) and eat 2 pieces of cheese on toast. Reading 3 hours later 14.8.

Decided to ring dr to ask for advice, did ask to speak to diabetes dr but no joy. Another dr wrote down info to pass on to diabetes dr but when she rang back the answer she gave me seems to me that i didnt get my point across. In the meantime took 2 units and result came down to 10.

She said that 14.8 wasn't really anything to worry about that i should return to my normal insulin doses and if i needed to lessen it because i couldnt eat so much only make it 2 units less. As I said again that wasn't the problem I was taking more insulin than normal and yet my levels were higher than normal. I would have thought taking less insulin would make matters worse. Seems they got way laid by me not taking morning meal insulin ... but i thought i wouldn't as I hadn't eaten anything and as I proved this wasn't when the problem occurred.

Now I am more confused than ever ... do I follow their advice which doesn't make any sense or follow logic and take more insulin. I read on another post that if numbers 13 take 10% of total insulin (is that levemir and novo rapid combined) and if 13 with ketones take 20 %. Is this better advice.

And surely 14 isnt good when we are told to keep between 4 and 7 ... 14 is double the max allowance. Now I really am confused! iS IT JUST ME ?!

I feel better by the wayjust bloody knackered and confused !

thanks x

The advice is odd but I can guess at why they are giving it you.

Short term high's even as high as 14 shouldn't cause long term problems. Especially if you otherwise have good control. Where as lows can cause significant issues and if you don't expect / manage them can be serious.

When I'm I'll or negligent (sometimes can't resist a treat   ) experience leads me to what I can inject to bring things back to normal without causing me too many issues.

Try injecting more if you are happy doing so, but make small changes, monitor the results and keep some fast acting carbs to hand in case of any surprises. You'll soon find out what works for you.
