Hi! Just need some advice. I am 39 yr old. Was at Dr with celluitis and he did random blood sugar test. It was 9.8. Dr felt I was diabetic and asked me to come back for fasting test. He sent blood to lab so not back yet. He did fasting test and bs was 5.3 which he said fine. My blood pressure was higher than usual. It was 110/80 . Always 90/70 until now. I eat healthy and am size 8 so not overweight. Also exercise. My mum and sister are both diabetic. I took fasting reading on her meter and it was 5.4. Two hours after meal it was 6.7.

Some totally non professional advice as you should really discuss with your gp but..

Your blood sugar test will be very dependent on what you ate. If you did the before and after readings in the evening then a fasting level of 5.4 could be seen as slightly raised as could be the final 6.7 you got. Saying that things don't get really bad unless you regularly exceed 7.8 at two hours.

As I say it depends on what you ate. Carbohydrates are what raise BG levels so if the meal had loads of rice, pasta, potatoes, pastry or similar starchy foods the 6.7 is a very good score. Obviously if you ate or drank anythink with a lot of plain sugar including fruit or pure fruit juices that 6.7 becomes excellent! If your meal was mostly just meat and veg then 6.7 is not quite so good but is still safe.

You can quite easily simulate the equivelent of a glucose tolerance test (GTT) by buying some Lucazade and drinking 400ml of it to get a better idea of how well you do. Just read and follow the instructions here.

Good luck

Thanks. Did test. Fasting BG was 5.6. One hr after lucozade BG was 10.3 and after 2 hrs was 21.8 . After four hours was at 9.9. Would those results make me diabetic or pre diabetic. I know they high and with family history concerned. I have dr apt next week so should I monitor and record my sugar levels until then.

Hi! The 21.8 sounds as if it could be a dodgy test. With a glucose-type test, you'd expect to see the one hour higher than the 2 hour, and 21.8 from 10+ just sounds wrong. So don't rely on that. I'd just tell the doc you want a HbA1c test if you're worried. That shows your average blood sugar levels over a period and will be more indicative.
