Advice needed please

Hi

My name is Sam and I'm 41 with a husband who has type 2 diabetes. I went to have my health MOT at the Nuffield Health gym where I'm a member and my blood sugar was 4.4 (not eaten for 2 hrs before the test as requested). Hubby was concerned about this and has since been checking my sugar readings, yesterday it was 4 half an hr after having my tea and the highest its been after eating is 6.8. We have checked in a morning before breakfast and it has been between 4 and 5.8. He's getting worried and now so am I as he should know about these things.

There is another side to this though and I'm currently waiting for a laproscopy to diagnose chronic pelvic pain and heavy bleeding so we are wondering if there is an issue that my body is trying to deal with and is affecting the sugar levels despite eating well and taking some gentle exercise (too painful to do much more than this).

I'm wondering if this is something just to keep an eye on ourselves or to see the doctor about. Yesterday I had a bit of a funny turn while shopping and had a glug of lucozade which then in seconds made me feel very hot and light-headed. Am I worrying for nothing?

Advice would be gratefully received

Thanks

These seem to be perfectly normal blood sugar levels for someone without diabetes and they are in fact what a lot of us with diabetes are aiming for.

I copied and pasted the following from the DiabetesUK website.

It is important that the blood glucose levels being aimed for are as near normal as possible (that is in the range of those of a person who does not have diabetes).

These are:

3.5–5.5mmol/l* before meals
less than 8mmol/l, 2 hours after meals.

A really good chart of normal blood glucose levels for people with Type 1 and 2 diabetes as well as people without diabetes can be found here: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care ... anges.html
Hope this helps but if you are worried then speak to your doctor.

I'm not sure what the concern is. They seem like perfectly normal blood sugar readings for a non-diabetic. Non-diabetics spend most of their time in the 4's, and 6.5 is the normal maximum the average non-diabetic goes to after eating a normal meal.

Nothing to worry about at all as you are exactly in the range a non diabetic should be. I'm not sure what your husband is worried about? Is it he feels your readings are too high or too low? Look here http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html but for yourself the important thing on the page is

For the majority of healthy individuals, normal blood sugar levels are as follows:

The normal blood glucose level in humans is about 4 mM (4 mmol/L or 72 mg/dL)
The body, when operating normally, restores the blood sugar level to a range of about 4.4 to 6.1 mmol/L (82 to 110 mg/dL)
Shortly after eating the blood glucose level may rise temporarily up to 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL)

As a Type 2 diabetic myself I follow the same advice and try and keep my levels between 4 & 6 as that's the normal range they would be if I wasn't diabetic. By doing so I minimise the risks of getting any of those bad diabetic complications.

Your results read fine, rest easy slc :)

Type 2 myself and like xyzzy I aim for results within the 4 >< 6 zone.

Thank you so much for the quick replies, I think it's just because I'm not well generally with my other issues that he is getting over concerned about this so I'll make sure he sees these figures

Thanks again

between 4 and 5 is perfectly normal for diabetics who are well controlled and non-diabetics alike.

Hi Sam, :)

Why does your husband think these are abnormal levels? - what are his levels like when he tests himself?. I only ask because it occured to me if your husband is concerned about the levels you have being too low his may actually be on the high side? - just a thought :)
