Hi,

I have type 2 Diabetes and have had for roughly 3 years, I take 1g Metformin twice a day. Everything was fine until I was prescribed Prednisolone around 15 months ago, the dosage of steroids has been reduced to 10mg a day And has been for at least 7 months. My BM’s have been really unstable for a number of weeks. When I wake in the morning they are normally around 7mmol, rising to 13-14ish after breakfast and medication, they continue to rise through the day sometimes reaching 24mmol. I feel fine when I wake and then get steadily worse during the day, tingling lips, shaking, tired to the point I need a sleep in the afternoons.

Any advice on what I can do to stabilise the sugars? The steroids are going to be with me for a while yet.

Many thanks in advance :)

If you have access to a specialist diabetes nurse get an appointment.

I was left at high teens to twenties for 6 months. Eventually I got 2 types of insulin. I am weaning off the prednisolone, down to 9mg , dropping 1mg a month.

Food is practically irrelevant when it comes to steroids. I was keto and still in the 20s.

Thank you, they will ring me tomorrow, fingers crossed I can come off the Pred soon

Word of caution. Regular nurses are like deer in the headlights. They are fixated on food. I eventually got to see the sdn who only goes to the surgery once a month.

She put me on humulin I which helped a bit. I also needed novorapid during the day to use as a top up.

If you can get the insulin ask if you can have a freestyle libre for duration of insulin. I couldn't have managed without it.

My daughter who is a nurse mentioned those insulin’s but obviously she’s not allowed to diagnose or treat me, so I’ll just go straight in with requesting insulin.

If you get it prescribed, come back to me. It is not straightforward and as I say, regular nurses (at the surgery) don't understand.

Happy to "talk" to your daughter too. She may not be happy with you taking any sort of advice from random strangers off the internet.

we discuss everything medical. Qualifications are fabulous but so is experience of living with the condition, put them together and hey presto you have sound advice.

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html This might help...I've gone very low carb (keto actually, being 20 grams of carbs a day or less), and while I have had steroid shots a few times in the interim, they weren't giving me spikes to have to go for insulin to get my blood sugars under control. I saw the odd nine and that was it, remained under the rest of the time. Hope you'll feel better soon!
Jo
